The Chiefs are spending this offseason bringing back familiar faces, and two of the most notable reunions involve very different parts of the roster. Eric Bieniemy is back in the offensive meeting room, while L’Jarius Sneed is returning to the secondary after a brief and injury-hit stop in Tennessee.
Bieniemy’s return was made official in a Zoom news conference, nearly 1,070 days after his last game as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator - the Chiefs’ 38-35 Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Since leaving, he spent 2023 as offensive coordinator for Washington, 2024 at UCLA, and then joined the Chicago Bears in 2025 as running backs coach.
Chicago’s ground game finished third in the NFL at 144.5 yards per game, and the timing of Andy Reid’s call made the move hard to turn down. Bieniemy said Reid reached out the day after the Bears’ 20-17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round, and he described the offer as one he couldn’t refuse.
Even with Bieniemy back, Reid is expected to keep most of the play-calling duties. Reid said he still enjoys calling plays, but he is also comfortable delegating and leaning on his staff for input.
Sneed’s path back is different, but just as significant for Kansas City. A source told The Star that the cornerback is signing with the Chiefs after being released by the Tennessee Titans in March.
Sneed was a major piece of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII championship runs before Kansas City traded him to Tennessee in 2024 for a 2025 third-round pick. Injuries limited his time with the Titans, and now he’s back with the team where he built his reputation.
During his first Chiefs run from 2020-23, Sneed played in 54 regular-season games and finished with 303 tackles, 40 passes defensed and 10 interceptions.
One familiar name that won’t be coming back is JuJu Smith-Schuster. There had been some interest in a reunion, but he signed with the New York Giants after putting up 129 receptions for 1,509 yards and six touchdowns across three seasons in here.
