Chiefs Receiver Problem Could Force A Massive Deadline Swing

As the NFL trade deadline looms, the Chiefs might have the perfect opportunity to bolster their struggling receiving corps by pursuing a trade for Jets' standout Garrett Wilson.

The Chiefs’ receiver problem has been hanging around for years, but this season has made the issue impossible to ignore. Kansas City has used premium draft capital on Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, yet even with both on the roster, the passing game still doesn’t have a steady go-to target. And with Tyquan Thornton out, the offense has taken a hard tumble.

That’s why the NFL trade deadline feels like a real turning point. The Chiefs don’t need another flyer or a one-year patch. They need a receiver who changes the conversation, and Garrett Wilson fits that description better than anyone else on the market.

The challenge, of course, is prying him loose from the Jets. New York handed Wilson a huge extension last year, and he remains a key piece of whatever the team is building around its quarterback of the future.

Still, the Jets have shown they’re willing to make bold moves on star players, even when those players are under contract. Sauce Gardner was shipped out at the 2025 trade deadline in a stunning deal, and that alone keeps the door cracked open for another blockbuster.

If Wilson is available, it likely won’t come cheap. The kind of package that might get New York’s attention would probably start with a first-round pick and go from there, using the Denver Broncos’ Jaylen Waddle deal as the rough benchmark.

Wilson has also made clear how he feels about the situation. He hasn’t asked out and likely won’t, but the frustration is there.

He said, "Yeah, I want to be here, man. I want to win games and that's the one thing we've been missing on here.

I love it here. Do I love it more than I love winning?

Nah, to be completely honest, but I'm hopeful."

That doesn’t amount to a trade request, but it may be enough for Kansas City to take a serious swing. If I’m Brett Veach, I’m putting a 2027 first-rounder and a 2028 third-rounder on the table and forcing the Jets to decide.

There are cheaper names out there, but they don’t really solve the problem. Isaac TeSlaa, Kayshon Boutte and Calvin Ridley could all provide pieces of what the Chiefs need, but none of them would fully fix the offense.

Kansas City needs more than a field-stretcher, even though replacing Thornton matters. The bigger issue is finding a third-down answer outside of Travis Kelce, because if an opponent can bottle up the run, it can choke the whole operation.

That’s why low-cost shopping doesn’t make much sense here. The Chiefs have a major flaw, and it calls for a major move. A trade for Wilson would cost real draft capital, but it would also give Kansas City the kind of impact receiver it has been searching for, and potentially turn the offense into one of the league’s most dangerous groups.

Chiefs Kicking Pressure Just Put Harrison Butker In The Spotlight

Harrison Butker has spent the week under a brighter spotlight than usual, but the veteran kicker responded in practice with a clean showing during a windy session. The Chiefs have been looking for steadier footing at the position after recent struggles, and Butker remains the preferred option as Kansas City turns its attention to an upcoming game against the Broncos.

The added pressure has only intensified since the Chiefs brought in Justin Tucker on the practice squad, giving the team another accomplished leg in the building and another voice in the mix. Both kickers have offered advice aimed at helping Butker sharpen things up, and for now the job still belongs to the player Kansas City trusts most when the game is on the line. [Read more 🡒]

Chiefs Head To Denver With One Rivalry Concern Looming Largest

A matchup with Denver arrives at a useful time for Kansas City, even if the stakes are already high. The Chiefs sit at 5-1 and the Broncos are right behind them at 5-2, which gives this one the feel of an early-season measuring stick in a division race that rarely stays tidy for long. Around the league, the conversation has centered on how Kansas City stacks up in a few key areas, from the ground game to whether the defense can keep pressure on the quarterback when the game tightens up.

Kansas Citys margin for error may come down to whether it can find steadier answers in the passing game and get more consistent disruption up front. The Chiefs have talent in the right places, but this trip to Denver comes with enough uncertainty to make it a real test of where they are right now, not just where the record says they should be. Chiefs Trade Buzz Builds Around A Familiar Fix At Receiver

The receiver market around the league is starting to shift, and one familiar name is already surfacing for Kansas City. Marquise Brown, now with the Eagles after two seasons in the Chiefs offense, is being mentioned by NFL insiders and analysts as a possible trade candidate as Philadelphia works through a difficult season and Browns role has been limited by injury and low usage.

For the Chiefs, the fit is easy to understand. They know Brown, they know what he can do when healthy, and they have a history of turning to players who already understand the system. The question is whether Philadelphia decides to move him at all, and if it does, how much of a return it would take to make a deal worth doing for a receiver whose recent production has been muted.
