Chiefs' Receiver Need Puts Brian Thomas Jr. Trade Buzz In Focus

The Kansas City Chiefs eye underutilized wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. as a possible solution to bolster their depth amid injuries, setting the stage for potential trade discussions with the Jaguars.

Brian Thomas Jr.’s situation has turned into one of the stranger trade storylines heading toward the NFL deadline, and the Chiefs look like a team that should be paying attention.

Kansas City is still unbeaten, but the roster isn’t spotless. Wide receiver has become a real issue, especially after injuries started stacking up, and a move before the trade deadline could ease a lot of that pressure. Thomas fits as the kind of swing worth exploring, especially with the Jaguars seemingly unwilling to feature him in any meaningful way.

The numbers tell the story. After a huge rookie season in 2024, when he posted 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, Thomas has fallen off hard.

He has only nine catches for 105 yards and one touchdown so far in 2026. In Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans, he didn’t play at all in the second half, and he finished the Week 6 defeat without a catch in Jacksonville’s 34-31 loss.

That kind of usage says plenty about where he stands in the offense. A player drafted in the first round sitting for an entire half is not exactly a sign of trust. With dropped passes piling up and no real rhythm with Trevor Lawrence, the sense is that both sides could benefit from a reset.

For the Chiefs, the fit is obvious. Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton both went down in Week 4 against the Raiders.

Rice, dealing with a hamstring injury, missed all of practice and Week 6 and could be out for an indefinite stretch. Thornton’s ankle injury is expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the regular season.

That leaves Patrick Mahomes leaning on Cyrus Allen, Jalen Royals, and Xavier Worthy. Worthy looked good against the Chargers, but Allen is still a rookie and Royals has remained buried for whatever reason. Thomas would give Kansas City a needed vertical element, the kind of speed and downfield threat the offense has lost with Thornton on injured reserve.

There are other names out there, but not many that move the needle. Tyreek Hill is the only notable free agent mentioned as someone who could make a real difference, but he is in the twilight of his career and is coming off the knee injury that ended his 2025 season after the first month.

The bigger question is price. Jacksonville says it is not shopping Thomas, though that kind of public stance often comes with a trade deadline purpose: drive the market higher before November 10.

Zachary Rotman of FanSided floated a Chiefs-Jaguars deal that would send Thomas to Kansas City for a first-round pick, with a fourth-rounder coming back to the Chiefs. Because Kansas City’s pick would come late in the first, that was noted as part of the appeal.

Still, that kind of asking price feels steep. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic had previously guessed back in March that Thomas could fetch a second-round pick. Maybe some extra draft capital would help Kansas City or another team make the numbers work, but even that now feels like a tricky sell.

The Houston Texans’ trade with the Arizona Cardinals for Marvin Harrison Jr. adds another wrinkle. That deal cost a second-round pick and an extra sixth-rounder, but Harrison came with a far different reputation as a prospect. Thomas is not in that same category, and with his role shrinking, it’s fair to wonder whether Jacksonville can really expect that kind of return.

A third-round pick might be closer to the mark. Maybe even that is a stretch, given the uncertainty attached to a receiver who has clearly lost traction in his current offense. The Chiefs are in position to buy, the Jaguars look ready to sell at least in this case, and Brian Thomas Jr. has become a player who makes sense on both sides of the trade conversation.
