The Kansas City Chiefs need help at wide receiver, and the trade rumor carousel is spinning fast. Most of the names floating around feel like wishful thinking, but Ted Nguyen of The Athletic took a more grounded swing at the question and landed on a few possibilities worth actually discussing.
The loudest name in the mix is George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys, but that idea comes with plenty of baggage. Nguyen labeled him a “dream” trade, and that feels fitting for a player who has a habit of turning into somebody’s headache. That kind of gamble does not sound like the move Kansas City needs right now.
A cleaner fit, at least on paper, is Josh Downs of the Indianapolis Colts. Nguyen called Downs the “next best option,” and also said the receiver could be significantly more productive in the Chiefs offensse. The price tag he floated was a fourth-round pick, which lines up with a Colts team that has basically put a lot of its key players on the market and seems eager to stockpile draft capital.
That said, a Downs deal would not come without questions. Whether he can create separation and actually solve Kansas City’s problems is another matter, especially with Andy Reid’s preference for speed at the position. That’s part of why Reid has been so attached to Xavier Worthy, even if Worthy has not done much lately to justify that kind of confidence.
Nguyen also mentioned Brian Thomas Jr., who has been in trade chatter for weeks. The proposed deal in that case would send Thomas to the Los Angeles Rams for a third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder.
But Thomas does not really look like a Chiefs fit. Drops have been an issue for him for a while, and that is the sort of problem Kansas City likely has no interest in taking on.
The source even pointed to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ trade for dependable receiver Jakobi Meyers as a move that helped quarterback Trevor Lawrence start to take off. The point is clear: someone will be disappointed if Thomas is acquired. The Chiefs probably should not be that team, while Downs remains a legitimate option worth keeping on the radar.

Travis Kelce Suddenly Looms Over Chiefs Broncos Showdown
Travis Kelce remains at the center of the Chiefs buildup to Sundays game against the Broncos, with his practice status drawing immediate attention because of how much he matters to Kansas Citys passing attack. He entered Wednesday as a full participant, a sign of optimism around his availability, and he still leads the team in receiving yards as the offense continues to lean on him.
The picture got a little less clear on Thursday, when Kelce was limited as the team worked through his injury situation. Kansas City is expected to take another look on Friday before making a call on whether he can suit up in Denver, leaving one of the Chiefs most important decisions hanging over the end of the week. Patrick Mahomes Just Weighed In On A Growing Josh Simmons Question
The Chiefs have a small but notable off-field storyline swirling around Josh Simmons, and Patrick Mahomes chose to address it directly. An ESPN report said Mahomes and Andy Reid asked the rookie to leave a team meeting, with Simmons at first brushing off the request before later apologizing. Simmons is currently on injured reserve with a herniated disk, so the conversation has landed at a delicate moment as he works away from the field and tries to stay connected to the group.
Mahomes didnt sound concerned about the long-term picture, even as the incident added another layer to Simmons early Chiefs tenure. He pointed to the work Simmons is putting in during rehab and said he expects the lineman to play again once he completes that process. For Kansas City, its another reminder that the development of a young player can be shaped just as much by how he handles the sidelines as by what he does once he gets back on the field. Chiefs Kicking Pressure Just Put Harrison Butker In The Spotlight
Harrison Butker spent Wednesday trying to quiet a storyline that has grown around the Chiefs kicking game, and he did it in conditions that would test just about anyone. With the wind whipping through practice, Butker was clean on all 10 of his field goal attempts, a useful reset after recent struggles and a reminder that Kansas City still sees him as the preferred option heading into the matchup with Denver.
The added pressure has only sharpened the focus on a spot that usually goes unnoticed until it matters most. The Chiefs brought veteran Justin Tucker onto the practice squad, and both kickers have been around each other enough to offer advice as Butker works to settle back in. For now, the job still belongs to him, but the next week or two will say plenty about how long that remains true. [Read more 🡒]
