Sunday Night Football nearly came to a crashing halt in overtime when Laquon Treadwell appeared to cough up the ball for the Colts. Instead, replay kept Indianapolis alive.
The sequence began after the Colts held the Chiefs to a field goal to open the extra period, giving themselves a shot to answer with either a tying kick or a winning touchdown. Daniel Jones then took a deep shot and hit Treadwell in the red zone, only for Kansas City to rip the ball away and celebrate what looked like the game’s final play.
That celebration was short-lived.
Officials went back to the replay to sort out one key question: was Treadwell down by contact before the ball came loose on the punch-out by Nohl Williams? Treadwell was clearly hit by a Chiefs defender as he tried to secure the catch, but the ruling depended on whether he had already established control when that contact happened. If he controlled it only after the hit, then it would have been a live fumble.
Replay ruled in Indianapolis’ favor. Officials determined Treadwell had gained control and was touched on the hip after that, making it a completed catch and putting him down by contact once his knee hit the turf. Because the ball came out after that point, the turnover was wiped away.
