The Chiefs still have a wide receiver problem, and one NFL insider thinks Stefon Diggs could be part of the answer.
Kansas City has been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Diggs, who remains without an NFL home for the 2026 season. During a recent appearance on the John Keim Report, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said the fit makes sense, even if the money side of it could complicate things.
"Kansas City makes some sense. It would be a fit and they could use an extra body.
But Kansas City hasn't really been in spend mode so I don't know that they want to do that and go that route. We'll see.
And they just gave Patrick Mahomes more money. But that would be a fit for me," Fowler said.
On the field, the case is easy to see. Diggs is coming off a 1,000-yard season with the Patriots, where he was a clear favorite target of Drake Maye. He also previously stood out as one of Josh Allen’s go-to options in Buffalo, which only adds to the appeal for a Chiefs team looking for more reliable production at receiver.
But the financial picture is less straightforward. Fowler pointed out that Kansas City has not been aggressive with spending, especially at wide receiver, and the team just paid Mahomes more money. Diggs may be looking for a deal that the Chiefs are not eager to make, and another receiver-needy team could simply outbid them.
Right now, Kansas City is expected to open the 2026 season with Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton, and Xavier Worthy as its starting wideouts. That trio is serviceable, but it also leaves room for improvement after a season in which the Chiefs did not get much offensive production even with a healthy Mahomes.
The depth chart behind them is thin, too. Fifth-round rookie Cyrus Allen, second-year player Jalen Royals, and newcomer Jimmy Holiday would likely be next in line if one of the starters went down, and that is not an ideal safety net.
For a team led by one of the league’s best quarterbacks, receiver remains a spot that has not gotten much attention. Adding Diggs would change that, and it would give Mahomes another proven target to lean on downfield.
