The Kansas City Chiefs are being tied to a receiver who can still change a game, but who also brings a messy legal situation with him.
That receiver is Stefon Diggs, a free agent after an excellent season with the New England Patriots. At 32, Diggs has been making his case loudly, betting on himself and pushing the idea that he belongs near the top of the league’s receiver hierarchy.
In an ESPN report that pointed back to a video Diggs posted last week to his YouTube channel, he said, "My opinion, I can compete with anybody," Diggs said in an ESPN report that referenced a video Diggs posted last week to his YouTube channel. He also said there are only seven “real 1s” in the league.
Still, the football fit comes with a lot of noise. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Diggs is facing multiple civil lawsuits, and that could make plenty of teams hesitate. The Chiefs, though, have a track record that suggests they might not be among the cautious ones.
One of the cases, according to Florio’s report citing TMZ, involves a man named Nigel King, who sued Diggs for falsely claiming King stole a Ferrari and for allegedly having Diggs’s friends attack him. The incident dates back to 2024, but delays pushed things along slowly, and Florio said that should “set the stage” for the litigation to move forward now.
The other lawsuit stems from an incident in November of last year. Florio reported that Diggs “sued a man named Christopher Griffith for falsely claiming Diggs had drugged and sexually assaulted him,” and Griffith responded with a counterclaim alleging that Diggs sexually assaulted him in 2023. Diggs has denied that accusation, and the case remains unresolved, with no settlement or dismissal.
On the field, the interest is easy to understand. At least five unnamed teams have reportedly “checked in” on Diggs, who posted 1,013 receiving yards in his first season with New England. There’s a strong chance the Chiefs were one of those teams.
Diggs also built a strong connection with Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, and that kind of reliability would appeal to Kansas City if it decided to make the move. Patrick Mahomes could certainly use that sort of production, but any signing would have to come with the off-field baggage attached.
The Chiefs have been selling Xavier Worthy as the answer at receiver, but if they plan to add another name, time is getting tight. Training camps around the league are set to open later this month.
