Chiefs Just Learned How Costly Tyquan Thornton's Absence Could Be

Travis Kelce shares his emotional reaction to Tyquan Thornton's tough injury and the hopeful outlook for his comeback.

Travis Kelce didn’t hide how much Tyquan Thornton’s injury hit him, even with the encouraging update on the Chiefs receiver’s ankle.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Thornton is expected to return in 12 to 16 weeks after dislocating his left ankle in Sunday’s game in Las Vegas. That timeline leaves the door open for a late-season comeback, and Kansas City still has two regular-season games in January before the possibility of a playoff run after its 4-0 start.

Thornton has been one of the Chiefs’ most productive downfield threats early on. His 219 receiving yards rank second on the team behind only Kelce, and his 19.9 yards per catch leads Kansas City. Then came the play that changed everything: a 55-yard catch in the Chiefs’ 30-27 win over the Raiders, followed by the injury that forced him out.

On the latest episode of the “New Heights” podcast, Kelce called the news heartbreaking and made clear Thornton is a major presence in the locker room.

“Everybody ... loves Tyquan. The guy just shows up every single day, with his construction hat on, ready to go to ... work and ready to put in the time and the effort that’s needed to have the success that he’s having,” Kelce said.

“We’re 4-0. He’s playing unbelievable.

He’s got Pat Mahomes’ trust. He’s got the coaches’ trust, and then to have something like this happen on such a big play in the game, it sucks, man.

It sucks, and obviously positive news with the ankle (recovery timeline) and in hopes that if we are in the playoffs, and he’s healthy enough he can get back out there.

"But at the same time man you just hate to see it happen to such a good guy, man. We’ve got a lot of ... good teammates and you guys are gonna hear me say how much I love these guys, but Tyquan is definitely at the top of the list, man. Everybody loves that dude.”

Maxx Crosby Just Took The Mahomes Rivalry Somewhere Personal

Maxx Crosby has never been shy about the edge that comes with facing Patrick Mahomes, and his latest comments on The Rush add another layer to one of the AFC Wests most familiar feuds. The Raiders pass rusher talked about the in-game back-and-forth with Kansas Citys quarterback, describing the kind of physical, play-to-play friction that has made every meeting feel a little bigger than the box score.

Crosby said Mahomes reacts in ways most fans never hear or see, and he pointed to the way the quarterback has responded after hits as part of their ongoing rivalry. For Kansas City, it is simply the latest reminder that Mahomes remains the standard every opponent circles, while Crosby keeps finding ways to be a problem whenever these teams line up across from each other. Brittany Mahomes Added More Postgame Buzz To Chiefs' Undefeated Start

The Chiefs kept their unbeaten start rolling with a 30-27 win over the Raiders, and the usual postgame chatter came with an extra layer of intrigue. Patrick Mahomes threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Kenneth Walker powered the ground game with 177 rushing yards and two scores, helping Kansas City move to 4-0 in a tight AFC West race.

Las Vegas had its own reasons to believe after falling to 3-1, even if coach Klint Kubiak said the offense still needs to sharpen up. Patrick Mahomes also made a point of crediting the Raiders' defense afterward, which only added to the buzz around a game that already had plenty of edge, and Brittany Mahomes helped keep the conversation going after the final whistle. Chiefs Suddenly Have A Trade Question Fans Werent Expecting

The trade market around the NFL is already starting to take shape, and one of the more interesting ripple effects for Kansas City comes from Detroits defensive problems. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler pointed to the Lions as a team that may need to upgrade its secondary, a sign that the market for cornerbacks and other defensive help could heat up quickly as the deadline approaches.

Kristian Fulton is one name Fowler floated, with Jalen Ramsey also mentioned as a possibility, and the urgency is obvious given that Detroit has been the leagues worst defense this season. The Lions are allowing 423.8 yards per game, but whether they actually pull the trigger on a deal before the deadline remains unclear, which is exactly the kind of uncertainty that can reshape who is available for teams watching the market closely.
