Chiefs Hire WR Coach Rob Gronkowski Ranks Among NFLs Top Three

The Chiefs latest coaching hire brings Super Bowl pedigree and high praise from Rob Gronkowski, signaling a strategic move to elevate their receiving corps.

The Kansas City Chiefs are wasting no time reshaping their coaching staff, and this week brought a pair of moves that could have a real impact on the offensive side of the ball. While there are still some vacancies left to fill - and possibly more changes on the horizon - the team has already made two notable additions.

One is a familiar face in Eric Bieniemy, who’s back as offensive coordinator after a three-year hiatus. The other is a new addition with a championship pedigree: Chad O’Shea, the team’s new wide receivers coach.

O’Shea comes to Kansas City after six seasons coaching wideouts in Cleveland, but his roots in the position run deep. Before his time with the Browns, he spent a decade in New England from 2009 to 2018, helping shape one of the most efficient and productive passing attacks of the era. During his time with the Patriots, O’Shea was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams and worked with a wide array of elite talent - including Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Julian Edelman.

And it’s Edelman’s development that former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski pointed to when asked about O’Shea’s move to Kansas City. Appearing on Up & Adams with Kay Adams, Gronk didn’t hold back in his praise for his former coach.

“Chad O’Shea is responsible… I wouldn't say responsible for Randy Moss’s and Wes Welker’s career in New England,” Gronk said with a grin, “but I would say he's responsible for Julian Edelman’s career in New England, that’s for sure.”

Gronkowski went on to highlight O’Shea’s deep football IQ and his ability to sync receivers with quarterbacks - a skill that should be music to the ears of Chiefs fans, especially with Patrick Mahomes under center.

“He helped that offense grow, helped those wide receivers be on the same page as Tom Brady,” Gronk said. “He’s got so much knowledge of the game.

I love Chad. We used to talk all the time at practice - just chit-chatting, having a great time talking ball.”

That kind of connection - both on and off the field - is part of what makes O’Shea such a compelling hire. Coaching isn’t just about schemes and playbooks.

It’s about communication, trust, and the ability to bring the best out of players. According to Gronk, that’s where O’Shea really shines.

“He’s a smart guy. Very smart.

Knows the game of football, no doubt about it,” Gronkowski said. “He was an offensive coordinator before, but I truly believe that he fits at the wide receiver position better than any other coach out there.

I wouldn’t say better than any other… but he’s a top guy. Probably a top-three wide receiver coach in the NFL.”

That’s high praise from a future Hall of Famer who’s seen his share of elite coaching. And it speaks volumes about what the Chiefs are getting in O’Shea: a coach with a championship résumé, a deep understanding of offensive football, and the ability to connect with players in a way that elevates their game.

For a team that’s built its identity around explosive plays and precision passing, adding someone like O’Shea to the mix could be a big win - especially as Kansas City looks to reload and retool for another run at the top.
