The Chiefs are 4-0 heading into their bye week, and that kind of start usually shines the brightest lights on the players already carrying the load. But it also opens the door for another conversation: who on this roster still has a bigger jump in front of him?
For Kansas City, a few names stand out as players who could take a noticeable step once the team returns to action. Some are getting a bigger runway because of injuries.
Others are still working through the early stages of their roles. Either way, the next stretch could tell us plenty.
Jalen Royals is one of the clearest candidates to keep climbing. He was already earning more reps and touches over the first four games, a meaningful change from the limited chances he got late last season. Even in spot duty, he made the most of the looks he got, and the early returns suggest he has been growing within the Chiefs’ system.
The path forward may be even clearer now. With Tyquan Thornton out for a while because of an injury, Royals should see more snaps and more targets in a wide receiver group that is already thin.
Patrick Mahomes already seems comfortable throwing his way. Royals has turned limited chances into positive gains and has found the end zone in the first month.
There is a real chance for the second-year receiver to add more to the offense than many expected in 2026.
Alohi Gilman is in a different spot. He was never going to be judged on flash, and matching the athletic profile Kansas City has had at safety in recent years was always a difficult ask. Still, his opening stretch with the Chiefs has been a little muted.
There have been plays where Gilman is just a step off against passes, especially in the intermediate and deep parts of the field. At other times, his angles against running backs have left him trailing instead of closing the space the way the defense needs.
The idea with Gilman has always been instincts and effort doing the heavy lifting. If he sharpens up those early rough edges, the ball production and steadier stops in space could start to show up more often.
He still looks like a potential bargain from the offseason.
Ashton Gillotte also fits the bill, even if his role limits how loud his box score can get. The numbers may not jump off the page, but the Chiefs are asking him to do work that can hide a player’s best traits. That does not mean the ceiling is capped.
Gillotte can still give Kansas City more as a run defender if his reaction speed sharpens. He can get more from quicker hands when he is fighting through blocks, and he can improve by getting through traffic faster when the play develops in front of him. There are also moments where he is late identifying where the run is headed.
There is another layer to his upside, too. If Gillotte finishes more of the pass-rush chances that come his way while other Kansas City linemen draw attention as blitzers, that would help the overall confidence in the Chiefs’ pass rush.
Peter Woods looks like the easiest rookie to put in this conversation. Through the first four games, he has already shown some impressive work against the run.
The power is there. So is the hand quickness that made him such an intriguing draft prospect in the first place.
The next step is simple to say and harder to get through: string together more of those winning snaps within individual games. Still, that does not look like a major obstacle.
What matters now is volume. If Woods gets the snaps, he can keep working through the learning curve that comes with facing veteran blockers and become a more physically imposing presence.
From there, he can keep building on his hand-counter package and technical growth.

Chiefs Rookie Cyrus Allen Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Matter
Cyrus Allen arrived in Kansas City with some summer buzz, but the rookie fifth-round pick has mostly been on the fringe through the first month of the 2026 season. The Chiefs have had plenty of mouths to feed in the passing game, and Allens early usage reflected that reality as he waited for a clearer opening behind more established options.
Now the picture looks different. Injuries have thinned the receiver room, and Andy Reid has signaled Allen should work into the mix more moving forward, giving the Chiefs a young pass catcher a chance to move from developmental piece to actual contributor. Allen and Patrick Mahomes have both talked like the opportunity is coming, and for a player who has been easy to overlook so far, the next stretch could decide whether his early hype starts turning into something real. Chiefs Fans Keep Having The Same Harrison Butker Debate For A Reason
Whenever the Chiefs run into kicking questions, the conversation seems to drift back to Harrison Butker, and for good reason. He has been one of the most reliable specialists of his era, piling up big moments in the playoffs and sitting near the top of the league in field goals made since 2017, which is why his name keeps surfacing whenever Kansas Citys margin for error gets thin.
The debate is never just about one type of kick, either. Butkers overall track record has been strong enough to keep him in the center of the discussion, even if his extra point work has not always matched the same standard, and the Chiefs have just seen how quickly a kicker can lose his footing after the latest roster move at the position. For a team that has lived through plenty of close games, that kind of consistency is exactly why this conversation refuses to go away. [Read more 🡒]
Taylor Swift's Chiefs Gameday Spotlight Is Becoming A Bigger Story
Taylor Swifts presence around Travis Kelce and the Chiefs has become part of the larger conversation surrounding Kansas City again, especially as the season gets rolling and the spotlight follows wherever Kelce goes. The two were married recently, and with preseason camp demanding his attention, their schedule has looked a lot like what comes with any high-profile football relationship: long stretches apart, public fascination and a steady stream of outside commentary from figures such as Emmitt Smith.
Even with that backdrop, Swift has kept showing up in support of Kelce, which only adds to the interest every time she is seen around the team. The dynamic has become one more layer to the Chiefs already closely watched season, with the public eager for updates and plenty of noise around her gameday appearances, even as the couple keeps the private side of it mostly out of view.
