Kenneth Walker III didn’t just arrive in Kansas City to give the Chiefs a running game. He arrived with the kind of résumé that should make people pay attention. So when Pro Football Focus slotted him at No. 9 in its top 10 NFL running backs list, it raised some eyebrows.
Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick built the ranking around career production, work as both a runner and receiver, plus standard and advanced stats. By that measure, Walker still landed outside the top tier, even after what the article described as the best season of his career.
That season ended with a Super Bowl appearance, a Super Bowl trophy, and then a payday. Walker signed a three-year, $43 million contract with the Chiefs after the title run.
The case for him is strong. The writers noted that Walker posted the highest rushing grade of any running back in the league and forced 61 missed tackles, which ranked fifth. They also pointed out that since 2022, only Derrick Henry has a better career grade.
Still, the ranking left room for debate. The biggest knocks on Walker were his work as a receiver out of the backfield and his pass protection. Those areas matter in a list like this, even if the other backs around him aren’t exactly being paid to stay in and block.
The bigger issue may be the shape of the list itself. This is a year where speed sits near the top, with Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs of the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, respectively, taking the top two spots.
And some of the other choices invite questions too. Christian McCaffrey is a dangerous weapon as a receiver, but the list has him at No. 4, which the piece treated as a debatable placement.
For Kansas City, though, the more important voice might be Patrick Mahomes. He’s already a believer in Walker.
"He's a great dude. That's the first thing I noticed,” Mahomes said in a piece by Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict.
“You can tell he truly cares about football, (and) he cares about his teammates. If he's not in the play, he's helping the guys on the sideline, and he's trying to learn and asking me questions and doing those things.
He's a great football player, [and] it's special. The way he's able to run the football, catch the football, (and) do everything. He's going to help us a lot on this team, by his mindset and the football player that he is."
