Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has spent the preseason showing both sides of the same coin: the kind of leg that can change a game in a blink, and the kind of inconsistency that keeps everyone around him on edge.
As he gets ready for his 10th NFL season, Butker has left coaches and fans with plenty to sort through before the Chiefs open against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, Sept. 14.
The biggest headline came in Tampa Bay, where Butker drilled a 69-yard field goal in Kansas City’s 16-15 preseason loss. It was the second-longest kick in preseason history, the longest of his career, and it even sparked a sideline celebration from Patrick Mahomes.
But that night also showed the other side of the ledger. Butker missed an extra point pushed back to 43 yards by a penalty, then later pushed a 43-yard field goal wide right. Those back-to-back misses ended up swinging the game to the Buccaneers.
The preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead brought more of the same mixed results. In the Chiefs’ 9-9 tie, Butker pushed a 57-yard attempt wide right in the third quarter and later sent a kickoff out of bounds, handing Seattle the ball at the 40.
Even with the misses, Butker still went 10 of 12 on field goals over the three preseason games and handled a big share of the scoring for an offense that reached the end zone only once.
He also spent camp changing how he works. Butker said he overhauled his training camp routine by taking field goal tries every 20 minutes instead of firing them off in rapid succession, with the goal of making the setup feel more like an actual game.
That approach comes after a strong finish to last season. Butker missed kicks in three straight September games, then bounced back to finish 33 of 38 on field goals and 31 of 33 on extra points. That 88.38% field-goal mark ranks him third among active kickers.
Midway through last season, he also moved away from low, line-drive knuckleball kickoffs and began using a higher-hang-time style with goal rotation, a change he says has helped his field goal accuracy.
