Travis Kelce hasn’t said a word about retirement, but one Instagram post from a longtime friend was enough to light up the conversation anyway.
Former NFL star Cris Carter posted a photo this week with Kelce and trainer Andrew Spruill, and his caption suggested the Chiefs tight end may already be thinking about the end of the road. Carter wrote, “Andrew and I started with Travis before his rookie year in the NFL.
Know the goat is preparing for THE LAST DANCE. Next stop Canton/HOF.”
That single line sent fans into a frenzy, especially because Kelce himself has not announced any plans to retire after the 2026 NFL season. Some immediately pushed back on Carter for saying it before Kelce had a chance to make any decision public.
“These guys have no respect or loyalty to Travis at all they’re just trying to get clout,” one fan wrote in the comments.
Another added, “So messy and inappropriate imo for him to write that. It’s NO ONE’S right to say that but Travis’ and now isn’t the time.”
A third comment took the same line: “Can Travis be allowed to announce his own retirement, please? Everything about him makes headlines.
Are you saying this for attention? He’s always said he doesn’t want a farewell tour or the focus to be on him during the season.
Travis has earned the right to announce this himself when he sees fit.”
The post landed at a time when Kelce is supposed to be locked in on football, not future plans. After marrying Taylor Swift earlier this month at Madison Square Garden in New York, he has turned his attention back to the Chiefs, who open the season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
Retirement talk isn’t new for Kelce. He dealt with plenty of it after last season, but instead of walking away, he came back for another year in Kansas City. He also signed a new contract in March worth about $12 million.
With training camp approaching, the focus around the Chiefs is supposed to be on the season ahead. The rookies report this week, and Kelce along with the rest of the veterans arrives next week.
For now, though, Carter’s post is the only thing pushing the retirement question into the spotlight. Until Kelce says otherwise, fans are left waiting to see whether this really is his “last dance.”
