Kansas City’s 24-10 win over the Dolphins in Miami briefly became the center of the latest referee debate after a penalty on Miami for a hit on Patrick Mahomes drew plenty of eye-rolling from fans. CBS Sports’ rules analyst said it was the correct call, but the conversation didn’t last long before another game produced what may have been the uglier miss of the young NFL season.
In the Broncos’ win over the Rams, Denver benefited from a pass-interference call that should have gone the other way, a decision that helped swing the result.
Still, the Mahomes play was enough to bring back the familiar talk that the Chiefs are routinely getting the better end of officiating. Paul Foeller says the data doesn’t support that idea.
Foeller, who is a Chiefs fan and once wrote for the Arrowhead Addict blog, created FORCE rankings to try to measure penalty luck in a more objective way. As he wrote, the goal was to find “ objective ways to quantify as much as possible, including penalty luck.
You can debate whether individual penalties were called correctly. But teams scoring higher here measurably benefited more from the penalties officials actually called.”
Going into “Monday Night Football,” Foeller’s FORCE rankings had the Chiefs at No. 30 in the NFL in penalty impact. At No. 1: the Chargers, who are 0-3.
