With the Chiefs set to kick off their season on Monday, fans are already treating Kansas City like the place to be. Some are even flying in from out of state, lining up new gear before they head to the game and chase what they hope turns into a Super Bowl season.
Marli Cole was one of them. She came into Kansas City on Saturday, rented a car, and made her first stop at Rally House to stock up on Chiefs merchandise.
“I’m super excited,” Cole said. “So, I’m a season ticket member for the last 15 years.
I don’t even live here anymore; I live in Phoenix. I fly in, I buy new merch, it’s like a tradition, and we go to the game.”
That kind of rush is exactly what Rally House is seeing as Chiefs season gets going. Lauren Heath, a team captain at the store, said the pace of sales stands out compared with other times of year.
“Every morning we have a sales goal that we try to hit, and it seems to be for Chiefs season, it seems to be exceeding way more than what we have for Royals season, and it’s just awesome to see everything,” Heath said.
The newest names are drawing plenty of attention, too. Mansoor Delane and Kenneth Walker are among the fresh additions fans are grabbing.
Still, some supporters are sticking with a familiar look. Gaston Faraudo said he’s replacing an old Patrick Mahomes jersey with a new one for the season.
“I am getting a new one [Patrick Mahomes jersey] because this is very old, and I want the new season one,” Gaston Faraudo, a Chiefs fan, said.
For Cole, though, the shopping trip comes with a ritual that doesn’t budge. No matter what new merchandise she picks up, she says two items are nonnegotiable when she comes in for game week.
“I have to wear this jacket with this pin when I fly in,” Cole said. “This is the tradition, so this jacket, I actually used to work for them [Chiefs], and I got this pin when I worked for them, so that’s the tradition.”
Heath said the scene is familiar around Chiefs season, with fans often waiting outside before the doors even open, ready to get their hands on new gear.
