Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice both hit developmental speed bumps, and Hollywood Brown, who had shown promise in the 2024 postseason, never quite carried that momentum into the new year. Thornton ended the 2024 season on Kansas City’s practice squad, and heading into 2025, he wasn’t exactly on the radar as a key contributor. Expectations were modest at best.
But once training camp rolled around, Thornton started stacking good days together. He wasn’t just making plays-he was building trust.
And when injuries and availability issues hit the Chiefs early in the season, Thornton was ready.

In an offense that’s been searching for explosive plays, Thornton delivered when called upon. If the Chiefs are looking to keep that chemistry intact-particularly with Mahomes coming off a knee injury-it makes a lot of sense to bring him back.
Who Else Could Come Calling?
Of course, Kansas City won’t be the only team looking to add wide receiver help this offseason. Across the league, there are a handful of teams that could see Thornton as a low-risk, high-upside addition.
The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns both finished near the bottom in total receiving yards in 2025. With Garrett Wilson and Jerry Jeudy as their lone consistent threats, respectively, both franchises are in desperate need of depth and versatility at the position. Thornton’s ability to stretch defenses could open things up for those WR1s and provide much-needed balance.
The Tennessee Titans are another team to watch. With young quarterback Cam Ward under center, Tennessee needs to surround him with more reliable weapons. Thornton could be a perfect fit as a vertical threat who doesn’t need a high volume of targets to make an impact.
Then there’s the Washington Commanders, who are facing a potential overhaul at wide receiver. Four of their pass catchers are set to hit free agency, and many of their 2025 contributors were on the older side. A younger option like Thornton could easily fit into what’s expected to be a refreshed offensive approach.

The Chiefs will have decisions to make this offseason, and cap space will be a factor. But retaining Tyquan Thornton feels like a smart, cost-effective move. He made just $1.1 million in 2025, and while he’s earned a raise, it’s unlikely to be a deal-breaker for Kansas City.
He knows the system, has chemistry with the quarterback, and still has room to grow. At just 25 years old, he’s young enough to be a long-term piece if he continues trending upward. And if the Chiefs want to stabilize a wide receiver group that’s seen more change than consistency lately, keeping Thornton in the fold could be a step in the right direction.
He’s not a household name-yet. But if 2025 was any indication, Tyquan Thornton might just be scratching the surface.
