The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2026 draft class has already created a roster squeeze, and the pressure is only going to build once cutdown decisions arrive.
That was one of the big themes on this week’s Kansas City Chiefs podcast, which also opened with an update on offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia. She is still recovering from the tragic shooting at their home, and the recovery is reportedly going well. Eric has been around Chiefs training camp for more than a week now, after Mia gave him her blessing to return to work.
The shooting stunned the football world, and the situation became even more troubling when it was learned that their son, Elijah, was the one who attacked Mia. Even so, the latest word is encouraging, with her recovery said to be on track.
Away from Kansas City, there was also a development involving former Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. The New York Giants released him, and that immediately sparked some excitement from the podcast hosts, Golden J and Chico, who are still advocating for the Chiefs to bring him back.
Smith-Schuster’s career has taken plenty of twists. He was a standout receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers, then had brief stops with the Chiefs and New England Patriots before returning to Kansas City and later signing with the Giants this offseason. Golden J still thinks the 29-year-old can play at a high level, especially with Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball.
But that possibility comes with a catch. If Kansas City does revisit Smith-Schuster, it could force the team into an uncomfortable roster call and potentially cost a rookie with real upside a spot.
Golden J pointed to the depth already showing up in camp and said it’s going to make life difficult for the coaching staff when roster cuts come around. One name he highlighted was rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who looked "explosive" in that loss and has been going viral on social media after stacking up several connections with Mahomes in training camp.
