Chiefs Eye Familiar Name as Nagy Nears Exit for Head Coach Role

As Matt Nagy inches closer to a potential head coaching role, the Chiefs may turn to a trusted former coordinator to keep their high-powered offense on track.

Chiefs Prepare for Potential OC Shake-Up as Matt Nagy Emerges as Titans Finalist

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs may be on the verge of another major shift on the offensive side of the ball. With offensive coordinator Matt Nagy reportedly among the final candidates for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching job, the Chiefs are already bracing for what could be their third OC change in the last six years.

According to multiple reports, including one from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Nagy is in the top three for the Titans’ vacancy. While no official decision has been made, the Chiefs aren’t waiting around. They’re already exploring contingency plans - and one name stands out among the rest: Eric Bieniemy.

Yes, that Eric Bieniemy.

The Chiefs have reportedly submitted a request to interview Bieniemy, currently the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears. It’s a move that would bring a familiar face back into the fold - and potentially restore a dynamic that helped shape one of the most explosive offenses in recent memory.

Bieniemy’s history with Kansas City runs deep. He joined Andy Reid’s staff as a running backs coach back in 2013 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 after Nagy left for his first head coaching opportunity with the Bears. Under Bieniemy’s guidance, the Chiefs reached new heights - including back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and two titles - all while Patrick Mahomes blossomed into the league’s most electrifying quarterback.

After helping the Chiefs hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 2023 following a win over the Eagles, Bieniemy took his talents to Washington, where he served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. But his time there was short-lived. The Commanders stumbled to a 4-13 finish, and a new head coach opted to go in a different direction, leaving Bieniemy on the move once again.

He landed in Chicago this season, taking on a role as the Bears’ running backs coach. But now, with Nagy’s potential departure looming, the door could be open for a Kansas City reunion.

It’s worth noting how cyclical this all feels. Nagy was Bieniemy’s predecessor as OC, and now Bieniemy could be stepping back into the role if Nagy heads to Nashville. The Chiefs haven’t confirmed any short list of candidates for the position, but Bieniemy’s experience - not just with the team, but with Mahomes and Reid’s offensive system - makes him a logical and potentially seamless fit.

For Kansas City, continuity is king. With Mahomes still very much in his prime and the offense continuing to evolve, keeping a steady hand on the play-calling wheel is critical. Bieniemy knows the personnel, the playbook, and the pressure that comes with being in charge of one of the NFL’s most scrutinized offenses.

Should Nagy get the Titans job - and signs are pointing in that direction - don’t be surprised if the Chiefs move quickly to bring Bieniemy back into the building. The partnership worked before, and with another Super Bowl window wide open, Kansas City may be looking to recapture that same magic once again.
