The Chiefs didn’t just beat the Broncos on Monday night. They smothered them.
Kansas City rolled to a 31-10 win in Denver, and the defense set the tone from the opening snap through the final whistle. The Broncos managed only 176 total yards and nine first downs, numbers that tell the story of a unit that spent the night in Bo Nix’s lap and in Denver’s backfield.
It was the kind of performance that fits the Steve Spagnuolo blueprint: fast, aggressive and relentless. Rookie defensive end R Mason Thomas put it simply: “We were fast, strong and physical,” rookie defensive end R Mason Thomas said.
That edge showed up everywhere. Kansas City brought pressure on 45.8% of Nix’s dropbacks, according to NextGen Stats, the second most by an opponent in the Denver quarterback’s career.
Nix had been sacked five times total in his four previous starts against the Chiefs. On Monday, he was taken down four times and finished with 131 passing yards.
The pressure wasn’t coming from just one source, either. Cornerback Nohl Williams got to Nix on the game’s first play.
Felix Anudike-Uzomah forced a fumble that Chris Jones recovered. Nick Bolton nearly turned another rush into a strip-sack and recovery.
And the rookie class kept making noise: Mansoor Delane grabbed an interception, Peter Woods knocked down a pass and Thomas added a sack.
“We were firing different guys, blitzing different guys and our corners on an island held up,” Bolton said. “That really helps when you can rush five, six even seven and the guys on the back end can hold up.”
The Broncos, who had won four of the past five meetings in the series and took the AFC West from Kansas City last season, never found a rhythm. Their rushing attack was held to 61 yards, and they converted just 2 of 12 third downs. Jaylen Waddle, added from the Miami Dolphins to boost the passing game, was quiet too, catching one pass for two yards on three targets.
Kansas City’s biggest stop came early in the third quarter. Mahomes had just thrown an interception, and the return gave Denver the ball at the Chiefs’ 5-yard line with KC up 21-7. But a holding penalty backed the Broncos up to the 15, a team sack cost them six more yards, and they ended up settling for a field goal.
That sequence summed up the night for Denver: a chance to make things interesting, then a defense that shut the door.
Kansas City entered the season with a defense already ranked in the top 10 in both points and yards allowed last year, despite a 6-11 finish in 2025. The Chiefs then added veteran tackle Khyiris Tonga and used their first four draft picks on defensive players. On Monday, that investment paid off in a big way.
Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, back in Kansas City after the previous two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, said the outing should settle any questions about what this group can be.
“We come into a new season trying to figure out where we’re at, and we come out and play like this,” Sneed said. “This should build great confidence.”
