The Chiefs opened the season by turning Jaylen Waddle’s Broncos debut into a quiet night in Denver.
Waddle, the only major addition on a Broncos roster that was mostly run back from last year, arrived via a blockbuster March trade that sent Miami a first-round pick plus third- and fourth-round picks. Denver brought him in hoping for more speed and more juice after the catch in a receiver room that had been pretty pedestrian. Instead, Kansas City smothered him from the jump.
He ended up with just one catch for two yards on three targets, and a lot of his role was more about clearing space than actually being featured. Even that was a little surprising for a player the Broncos clearly wanted to highlight in his first game with the team.
The one real chance he had to make a difference came on a third-and-7 with a little more than 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Denver hit Waddle on a quick slant, and there was room for him to turn it into something big.
He had a lane between Chiefs defenders and plenty of opportunity to break free for an explosive play. But he dropped the pass while it was delivered in stride.
That missed chance loomed large. If Waddle hangs on there, Denver might finish the drive with points, and a touchdown would have made it a 21-14 Kansas City lead. Instead, the Broncos never got back within 10 the rest of the way.
The bigger story for Kansas City was how much cleaner and faster the defense looked right out of the gate. Steve Spagnuolo’s group is still going to deal with some growing pains because of how young it is, but the Chiefs also showed the payoff from adding speed across the board this offseason. Waddle felt that difference immediately.
Kansas City tackled better, pressured the quarterback, and made life uncomfortable for pass catchers working in traffic. The Chiefs were also sharper on money downs, getting off the field earlier than they were doing in 2025. For one opening night, that was a major step forward.
For Denver, the strange part was how little Waddle mattered. Kansas City essentially took away the Broncos’ top wideout, and his quiet debut became one more box the Chiefs checked on a strong Week 1 defensive showing.
