The Chiefs spent the offseason reshaping their secondary, and that push may have created a problem for one of their newer additions: Kader Kohou.
Kohou arrived in Kansas City after the Dolphins decided they didn’t want to meet the money he was seeking. Now, though, there’s a real chance his stay with the Chiefs could be short-lived if he can’t carve out a spot on the 53-man roster. If that happens, he may not be on the market for long - and Miami could be waiting.
Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic pointed to the Chiefs’ crowded defensive back room and suggested Kohou could be the odd man out. He also said the Dolphins should be ready to pounce if that happens.
"The Chiefs are suddenly stacked in the secondary, and that could point Kohou towards the exit. The Chiefs would be making a mistake, one that the Dolphins should watch closely," Miller wrote.
"In Kansas City, Kohou took first-team reps during OTAs and mini-camps, but the Chiefs now find themselves with a lot more talent than they had in March. After drafting Mansoor Delane and Jadon Canady, the Chiefs brought back L'Jarius Snead as well."
Kohou isn’t a sure thing to stick, even though he’s already gotten work with the first team. Brett Veach has a history of bringing in veterans on the cheap before the draft as a fallback option, and this could be another example of that approach.
He had been viewed as insurance for Kansas City after Trent McDuffie was traded, but the Chiefs’ other moves have changed the picture. Kohou is also coming back from an injury, which could factor heavily into whether he survives the roster cut. And with the additions of Jadon Canady and L'Jarius Sneed, the competition at cornerback has only gotten tougher.
