Matt Nagy Advances in Titans' Coaching Search as Chiefs Begin Offensive Reset
The Kansas City Chiefs are bracing for a potential shakeup on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has advanced to a second interview with the Tennessee Titans for their head coaching vacancy - a strong signal that he's firmly in the mix for the job.
Nagy’s name has been circulating in connection with the Titans for a few weeks now, but a second interview is where the conversations start to get real. He’s not alone in the race - Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is also confirmed to be getting a second look from Tennessee - but Nagy’s familiarity with the head coaching role and his offensive background clearly have him in serious contention.
Support from Within the Kingdom
Inside the Chiefs’ building, Nagy has no shortage of supporters. Both quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have spoken highly of him, with Reid going as far as to say, “I think he deserves to be a head coach in this league.”
That kind of endorsement carries weight. Reid has long been a coaching tree cultivator, and Nagy - who previously served as head coach of the Chicago Bears - could be next in line to branch out once again.
Still, the timing of Nagy’s potential departure feels less like a surprise and more like an inflection point. His contract expired following a rocky 2025-26 season in which Kansas City's offense never quite found its rhythm.
While the Chiefs still boast elite talent - starting with Mahomes - the unit lacked the consistency and explosiveness fans have come to expect. A new voice at offensive coordinator might be exactly what the franchise needs to recalibrate.
Offensive Overhaul in Kansas City
Nagy isn’t the only offensive coach potentially on the way out. The Chiefs have already made moves that suggest a broader reset is underway.
Running backs coach Todd Pinkston was let go on Jan. 15, just over a week after wide receivers coach Connor Embree was dismissed on Jan. 7.
It’s a clear signal from the organization: changes are coming. Kansas City’s offense wasn’t up to its usual standard this past season, and it appears some of the staff is bearing the brunt of that disappointment. Whether it’s scheme, execution, or personnel usage, the Chiefs are looking to turn the page and get back to what made them so dangerous in recent years.
Spags Drawing Interest, Too
On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is also drawing head coaching interest. He’s been in the interview mix for the Titans job as well and previously garnered attention from the New York Giants before they hired former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.
Spagnuolo has been a steady hand for Kansas City’s defense, helping transform that unit into a championship-caliber group. If he moves on, it would mark another significant change for a team that’s been defined by stability under Reid.
What’s Next for the Chiefs?
With both coordinators potentially on the move and multiple position coaches already out, Kansas City is entering a pivotal offseason. The Chiefs still have the league’s best quarterback in Mahomes and a future Hall of Famer in Reid running the show, but the staff around them is shifting fast.
If Nagy lands the Titans job, it’ll be a fresh start for him and a new chapter for the Chiefs offense. And while the names on the coaching staff may change, the expectations in Kansas City won’t. This is still a team built to contend - but after a turbulent 2025-26 campaign, it’s clear that some recalibration is already underway.
