Kansas City’s offensive line took an unexpected turn on Sunday, and the Chiefs didn’t offer much in the way of public explanation.
Starting left guard Kingsley Suamataia was nowhere to be found on the opening drive against the Raiders, and that absence turned into a full-game disappearance. Suamataia never got on the field in Kansas City’s 30-27 win, with Mike Caliendo handling the job at left guard instead.
After the game, Andy Reid made it clear he wasn’t going to air out the details.
“As far as the Kingsley thing goes, before you guys ask, that’s between Kingsley and I,” Reid said. “We’ll figure it out, and down the road, we’ll be better as a team for it and Kingsley will be better for it.”
Reid repeated the point when pressed again, suggesting his first comment may not have come out exactly the way he intended, but standing by the message all the same.
“That’s between Kingsley and I, I might’ve stuttered when I said that, but that’s what I meant,” Reid reiterated.
The wording sure sounded like a benching tied to discipline, though Reid didn’t go any further than that. The Chiefs did have to live with the change on the field, and Caliendo had his hands full at times against Raiders defensive tackle Adam Butler. Still, Kansas City has leaned on Caliendo before, and there’s trust there after four seasons with the team.
Patrick Mahomes backed that up afterward, while also making it clear Suamataia remains part of the picture.
“Kingsley knows how important he is to the team. Like coach said, he’ll keep it between him and Kingsley,” Mahomes said.
“But at the end of the day, you have a guy like Mike Caliendo, who’s played in a lot of big games and had a lot of reps. He stepped right in and did a great job against a really good defensive line.
We’ll have Kingsley back in the fold here soon.”
Suamataia, 23, had started all 17 games for Kansas City last season and opened this year as the starter for the first three games. The Chiefs had moved him to left guard in his second season, and he had done well in that role.
The line was already short-handed going into Sunday, with left tackle Josh Simmons still out for the season because of a bulging disc in his back.
Even with that issue hanging over the offense, Kansas City got what it needed most: a win before the bye. The Chiefs head into the break as one of only three undefeated teams in the NFL and the lone unbeaten team in the AFC.

Chiefs Suddenly Have A WR Problem They Couldnt Afford
The Chiefs were already navigating their share of offensive questions when Sundays game against the Raiders turned into a deeper problem at wide receiver. Rashee Rice left earlier with a hamstring injury, then Tyquan Thornton went down late in the fourth quarter after hauling in a significant catch, adding another hit to a passing game that could ill afford it.
Thornton was carted off the field with what looked like a severe ankle injury and is expected to miss time, which leaves Kansas City even thinner at a spot where reliability matters every week. With Rice also sidelined, the Chiefs now have to piece together production from the rest of the receiving group and hope the damage does not linger into the next stretch of the schedule. Chiefs Fans Have Every Right To Question This Mike Caliendo Decision
The Chiefs Week 4 win over the Raiders came with an offensive line adjustment that raised eyebrows before and after the final whistle. Kansas City replaced starting left guard Kingsley Suamataia with veteran Mike Caliendo, and Andy Reid confirmed afterward that it was a coaching decision without offering much beyond that, calling it a private matter between him and Suamataia.
The move matters because left guard is one of the spots Kansas City can least afford to leave unsettled, especially with depth concerns already hanging over the line. Even with the offense getting the result it needed and the Chiefs still unbeaten, the decision left a familiar question lingering in the background: whether this was a one-game tweak or the start of something more significant. Raiders Halftime Confidence Just Turned Into More Chiefs Humiliation
Brittany Mahomes was at Allegiant Stadium for the Chiefs matchup with the Raiders and had a front-row view of a familiar AFC West script: Kansas City finding a way to win again. After the Chiefs erased the gap and pulled out a 31-27 victory, Mahomes took to Instagram and poked fun at Raiders head coach Klint Kubiaks halftime confidence, turning a tense divisional game into another piece of Chiefs bragging rights.
The win pushed Kansas City to 4-0 in the regular season and kept the Chiefs in their usual early-season stride, even as the game came with a costly concern elsewhere. Receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a significant injury, leaving the Chiefs with more to monitor beyond the record and the postgame chatter. [Read more 🡒]
