Chiefs Best Linemen Are Suddenly Facing A Much Bigger Burden

The Kansas City Chiefs may still be sorting out the tackle spots, but the middle of the offensive line is getting plenty of respect.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN put together a top ten list that included two Kansas City interior linemen, with center Creed Humphrey landing third and guard Trey Smith coming in at seventh. For Chiefs fans, that’s the kind of recognition that cuts through some of the noise around the rest of the line.

Humphrey’s placement was no shock. He’s been a fixture near the top of center rankings for a while, and Fowler said he “slipped slightly in the ovreall rating."

One NFL personnel executive praised the way he plays, saying, "He's got an unorthodox style of play, but once he gets ahold of you, it's really hard to shake," a personnel executive with an NFL team said. "He's been really consistent and consistently the best center in the league.

He runs the show well and is ultra physical and athletic."

The numbers Fowler cited backed up the reputation. Humphrey posted a 98.5 percent pass block win rate, though Fowler also pointed out that he did not crack the top ten interior linemen in run block win rate. Even so, the résumé is hard to miss: four Pro Bowls and back-to-back first-team All-Pros across his first five NFL seasons.

The most revealing line in the piece came from a veteran NFL defensive coach, who said, "We didn't game-plan much for him, if at all," said a veteran NFL defensive coach. "We were more worried about Trey Smith.”

Smith’s ranking at seventh came with a little more debate. Fowler noted that several voters thought Smith had a down year in 2025, even though his pass protection numbers were strong. He allowed zero sacks in 389 pass-block attempts.

Another defensive coach offered a blunt scouting view: "You can knock him back in the pocket or beat him backward," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "That's how we felt last year."

Still, Smith’s value has never been hard to spot. A sixth-round pick in 2021, he has already made back-to-back Pro Bowls and given Kansas City a sturdy presence on the interior.

An NFC executive described him this way: "He's a really good foundational piece," an NFC executive said. "Raw power, sets a tone.

There just aren't many like him."

The bigger question now is how the Chiefs use both linemen going forward. Humphrey and Smith are expected to take on more interior blocking responsibility for new running back Kenneth Walker III, and how that adjustment goes could end up shaping Kansas City’s season.

Chiefs Just Made One Move That Could Reset Their Offense

After a 6-11 season that sent Kansas City to the sidelines for the first time with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs spent the offseason looking for answers on offense. The running game was a clear problem area, and the front office responded by bringing in Kenneth Walker III on a three-year contract, a move aimed at giving the unit a more reliable downhill presence and taking some pressure off the passing game.

Eric Bieniemys return to the coaching staff adds another layer to that reset. His previous run in Kansas City helped define one of the leagues most consistent offenses, and the hope now is that pairing a familiar play-caller with a revamped backfield can pull the Chiefs back toward the standard they set for so long. The question is whether this version of the offense can quickly regain that edge after a year that exposed just how far it had slipped. [Read more 🡒]

Chiefs Fans Are Suddenly Wondering About Travis Kelces Dog Situation

Travis Kelces off-field life keeps finding ways to pull Chiefs fans in, and the latest curiosity has nothing to do with a route tree or a red-zone target. Around the time of his wedding, he and Taylor Swift were reportedly seen with a large white dog, which immediately sent people looking for clues about whether the couple had added a new four-legged member to the picture.

The interest makes sense given Kelces past with pets. He previously had two dogs, and after his breakup his ex-girlfriend said she took them with her. Even Jason Kelce has contributed to the familys dog lore, sharing a story about one of Travis former puppies doing damage to a couch, which is probably why any fresh canine sighting around the Chiefs star now gets noticed so quickly. Chiefs Fans Get A Painful Reminder About L'Jarius Sneed's Titans Stint

L'Jarius Sneeds return to Kansas City comes with a little more perspective than nostalgia. The Chiefs know exactly what he was before the trade to Tennessee, and they also know how quickly a big-ticket move can go sideways when a players health and production dont line up with the contract attached to him.

The Titans committed to Sneed on a four-year deal, but injuries and uneven play kept him from ever settling in, and his time there ended after just 12 games over two seasons. Now he is back in Kansas City on a one-year contract, with expectations dialed way back and no clear path to a starting job in the secondary. [Read more 🡒]
