Chiefs Add Former First-Round CB Amid Overhaul

As the Kansas City Chiefs continue to reshape their defensive lineup, the addition of cornerback Kaiir Elam marks a strategic move in their ongoing secondary overhaul.

The Kansas City Chiefs are shaking things up in their secondary, and their latest move brings cornerback Kaiir Elam into the fold. As the Chiefs work to fill the gaps left by recent departures, Elam's arrival marks a strategic addition to their defensive backfield.

Elam, at just 24, has already had a whirlwind career. He’s seen action with the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans after being initially drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2022 as the 23rd overall pick.

During his time with Dallas, Elam played in ten games and started seven before being released in November. He then joined the Titans, adding four more games to his resume.

Despite his travels, Elam’s first-round pedigree is undeniable. With 43 games and 19 starts under his belt, he’s snagged two interceptions and defended eight passes. His potential is something the Chiefs are banking on, especially under the guidance of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, known for developing cornerbacks into formidable players.

The Chiefs’ secondary overhaul comes on the heels of trading cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Rams and seeing Jaylen Watson follow suit in free agency. Safety Bryan Cook’s move to the Bengals further underscores the need for fresh talent and competition in Kansas City’s defensive backfield.

To bolster their ranks, the Chiefs have also brought in cornerback Taron Johnson from the Bills and signed free agent Kader Kohou. Safety Alohi Gilmore is another new face expected to strengthen the deep coverage unit.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs may continue to reshape their secondary through the draft. Their track record of finding tough, physical cornerbacks in the later rounds is promising, and Spagnuolo will likely play a key role in those decisions.

General Manager Brett Veach is also eyeing improvements in the pass rush, recognizing that a stronger front line will alleviate pressure on the secondary. Last season, the Chiefs struggled when their pass rush faltered, highlighting an area ripe for enhancement.

As the Chiefs continue their defensive rebuild, all eyes will be on how these new pieces come together to form a cohesive and resilient unit.
