Cardinals Eye Emotional Reunion With Fan Favorite

Jordan Montgomery's return to the Cardinals could offer the perfect blend of experience and strategic advantage for a postseason push, making him an intriguing target in this year's free agency.

The Cardinals have already shown the template. Last offseason, they wanted a veteran starter who could help immediately and still carry trade value later, and that’s exactly how the Dustin May move played out.

May logged 21 starts in St. Louis before getting dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers with JoJo Romero for No. 5 prospect Alexander Frias and No. 11 prospect Josiah Ragsdale.

That kind of setup is worth revisiting, and Jordan Montgomery fits it cleanly.

Montgomery isn’t a stranger to St. Louis.

He was part of the Cardinals’ last playoff team in 2022 after arriving from the New York Yankees that summer. The next year, the Cardinals sent him to the Texas Rangers during a fire sale, and he went on to win a World Series there.

Since then, though, the road has been rough.

He lingered on the market before the 2024 season, then turned in the worst year of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. After that came another long stretch away from consistent work: Montgomery missed the entire 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign. In 2026, he made 13 appearances out of the Rangers’ bullpen and posted a 4.15 ERA.

Now 33, the left-hander is headed back into free agency, and the Cardinals should be ready to make a call as soon as the market opens. The biggest reason is simple: he finally appears healthy, and that matters more than anything after the last few years. Signing late did not help him in 2024, so this time around he should have a full offseason to get ready for 2027.

The price should be manageable, too, because his recent track record will push it down. But the upside is still there.

From 2021 through 2023, Montgomery put together a 3.48 ERA across 94 starts, and that’s the version of him St. Louis would be betting on.

If he signs early enough, he could have the kind of normal preparation that never really came together over the past couple of seasons.

For the Cardinals, the fit is obvious. They need a veteran arm to go with their younger pitchers, and Montgomery brings more than innings.

He knows what winning looks like, with a World Series ring on his resume and a playoff appearance in a Cardinals uniform. If St.

Louis ends up needing to pivot again at the deadline, he also gives them the same kind of trade flexibility they just used with May.

That’s why Montgomery should be near the top of the list when free agency opens.

Maxx Crosby Just Took The Mahomes Rivalry Somewhere Personal

Maxx Crosby has never been shy about the edge that comes with facing Patrick Mahomes, and his latest comments on The Rush add another layer to one of the AFC Wests most familiar feuds. The Raiders pass rusher talked about the in-game back-and-forth with Kansas Citys quarterback, describing the kind of physical, play-to-play friction that has made every meeting feel a little bigger than the box score.

Crosby said Mahomes reacts in ways most fans never hear or see, and he pointed to the way the quarterback has responded after hits as part of their ongoing rivalry. For Kansas City, it is simply the latest reminder that Mahomes remains the standard every opponent circles, while Crosby keeps finding ways to be a problem whenever these teams line up across from each other. Brittany Mahomes Added More Postgame Buzz To Chiefs' Undefeated Start

The Chiefs kept their unbeaten start rolling with a 30-27 win over the Raiders, and the usual postgame chatter came with an extra layer of intrigue. Patrick Mahomes threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Kenneth Walker powered the ground game with 177 rushing yards and two scores, helping Kansas City move to 4-0 in a tight AFC West race.

Las Vegas had its own reasons to believe after falling to 3-1, even if coach Klint Kubiak said the offense still needs to sharpen up. Patrick Mahomes also made a point of crediting the Raiders' defense afterward, which only added to the buzz around a game that already had plenty of edge, and Brittany Mahomes helped keep the conversation going after the final whistle. Chiefs Suddenly Have A Trade Question Fans Werent Expecting

The trade market around the NFL is already starting to take shape, and one of the more interesting ripple effects for Kansas City comes from Detroits defensive problems. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler pointed to the Lions as a team that may need to upgrade its secondary, a sign that the market for cornerbacks and other defensive help could heat up quickly as the deadline approaches.

Kristian Fulton is one name Fowler floated, with Jalen Ramsey also mentioned as a possibility, and the urgency is obvious given that Detroit has been the leagues worst defense this season. The Lions are allowing 423.8 yards per game, but whether they actually pull the trigger on a deal before the deadline remains unclear, which is exactly the kind of uncertainty that can reshape who is available for teams watching the market closely.
