The Kansas City Chiefs are navigating a rollercoaster of possibilities in their quest to strengthen the backfield this offseason. With NFL free agency looming, the Chiefs have received mixed news that could significantly impact their strategy.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to use the franchise tag on Kenneth Walker Jr., fresh off a stellar Super Bowl MVP performance against the New England Patriots. This opens a potential opportunity for the Chiefs.
However, the situation with Breece Hall and the New York Jets is less straightforward. Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports that the Jets are inclined to use every tool at their disposal to retain Hall, or at least make it costly for any interested teams.
Rosenblatt suggests that the Jets might apply either the non-exclusive franchise tag or the transition tag on Hall, giving them leverage to negotiate or match any offers. Hall, who just completed his fourth season with the Jets, has hinted at wanting a change of scenery, but New York seems determined to keep him in their plans.
The Chiefs had previously shown interest in Hall at the NFL trade deadline, reportedly offering a fourth-round pick for him. However, the Jets opted to hold onto their star running back despite their struggles in the AFC East.
If the Jets decide to play hardball, Hall's options could be limited. The tagging system allows the Jets to match any external offers, and an exclusive tag would prevent other teams from making offers altogether. While this could secure Hall a significant salary increase next year, his only alternative might be a holdout, which comes with financial penalties.
The Chiefs are undoubtedly hoping the Jets won't engage in a prolonged standoff with Hall. Yet, the potential for drama is there, and Kansas City might need to look at other talented free agents to bolster their running game. Hall remains a key target due to his skills and local connections, but the Jets' willingness to negotiate will ultimately determine the Chiefs' chances of landing him.
