The Chiefs and Broncos are set to open the 2026 season with a Week 1 matchup that doubles as a return date for two AFC West quarterbacks who spent the back half of 2025 working their way back from major injuries.
Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix both had their seasons cut short, both went under the knife, and both are now back in position to take the field when the spotlight turns to Monday Night Football. The path each one took back was different, but the result is the same: they’re ready to move forward after long layoffs.
Mahomes’ setback came in Week 15, when his 2025 season went from rough to brutal in a loss to the Chargers. He tried to escape a defender, got his left leg caught in the turf as he went down, and left with a torn ACL and torn LCL. The injury ended his season on the spot.
He had surgery on Dec. 15, 2025, just one day after the injury. At the time, the recovery window was framed as roughly nine months at the optimistic end, with a year as the more cautious estimate.

Kansas City cleared Mahomes for full participation during July training camp, and when he returned to the field, he was wearing a compression sleeve and brace on his left knee.
By Monday, it will have been nearly nine months to the day since the ACL tear. Mahomes will have missed only two games because of the injury, and his seven-month return-to-practice timeline stacks up well against other quarterbacks who came back from ACL tears, including Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson and Robert Griffin III. The Chiefs are expected to be careful with him as he tries to settle back in after the longest absence of his career.
Nix’s road back began after Denver’s AFC divisional win over the Bills on Jan. 18.
On the Broncos’ final drive, he landed awkwardly after moving to the side on a quarterback sneak meant to take pressure off kicker Wil Lutz, and he suffered a right ankle fracture. Nix stayed in the game and did not miss a snap.
Sean Payton didn’t realize anything was wrong until he congratulated Nix on the sideline after Lutz’ game-winning field goal, according to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio.
Doctors later determined that Nix had broken a bone in his ankle, and he was ruled out for the rest of the postseason. That pushed Jarrett Stidham to the top of the depth chart for Denver’s AFC Championship game against the Patriots. Nix had surgery less than a week after the divisional round ended, and Payton said he expected him back in Broncos colors by the start of the 2026 season.
Nix was back on the field by the end of August, and in Denver’s preseason loss to the Packers he threw a touchdown. He also had another surgery in April to clean up bone spurs and was mostly kept out of team drills during the Broncos’ offseason program, though he did throw on a limited basis during June’s mandatory minicamp.
After that preseason appearance, Nix said, "[I was] excited, not really nervous," Nix said after his preseason cameo, according to ESPN. "I knew it was just going to be a few plays and wanted to see the production."
