The conversation around Andy Reid’s future in Kansas City is already starting to surface, and one name has been floated as the coach who could eventually take over the Chiefs: Kyle Shanahan.
On Wednesday’s episode of The Ringer Fantasy Football Show, host Danny Heifetz said he could see whispers building if the Chiefs miss the playoffs again. “I kinda think if the Chiefs miss the playoffs again, I think people are gonna have whispers about Andy Reid should be out as the coach,” Heifetz predicted. “I think you can miss the playoffs with [Patrick] Mahomes once, but once you do it twice…”
Co-host Danny Kelly pushed back on the idea that Reid would be on the chopping block, saying he believed Reid would remain the team’s coach whether Kansas City makes the postseason or not. Heifetz, though, laid out a different timeline.
“I don’t think they’re gonna fire him after this season,” Heifetz added. “But if they miss the playoffs again, they’re gonna go into [2027], and they’re gonna be like, ‘OK, well you can’t miss the playoffs with Mahomes three times.”
Heifetz then went a step further and named his preferred successor for the Chiefs in the future.
“The coach of the Chiefs in 2029 should just be Kyle Shanahan…Because Andy Reid is gonna be 70 … he’s no longer the best coach in the NFL,” Heifetz continued. “And Kyle Shanahan is kind of the perfect person. The Niners thing seems exhausting, and Kyle Shanahan kind of is Andy Reid, honestly,” he added.
Craig Horlbeck backed the idea, saying, “I think there’s something there…He’s like, ‘Yeah, I’ll take Patrick Mahomes, that sounds great.”
For now, Reid remains the man in charge, and the Chiefs are expected to be better in 2026 with Mahomes back on the field. Kansas City recently won back-to-back Super Bowls, and most of the core from that run is still in place. Reid, now 68, has already built a coaching résumé that puts him in rare company: he has been to six Super Bowls and won three of them, all with the Chiefs.
And if the current group keeps rolling, a fourth title still doesn’t sound far-fetched.
