The Kansas City Chiefs have made an intriguing move by bringing in Justin Fields as a backup to Patrick Mahomes, and head coach Andy Reid is optimistic about what he can bring to the table. Fields, known for his athleticism, has had a rocky journey in the NFL so far, but Reid believes there's untapped potential waiting to be unleashed.
At the annual league meeting, Reid expressed his admiration for Fields’ versatility. “I like his game,” Reid stated.
“He can handle the drop-back game, movement plays, and play-action scenarios. He’s got the full package.”
While Fields' previous stints haven't fully showcased this, Reid's confidence in his ability to develop players is well-known.
Fields’ athletic prowess is undeniable, making him a dynamic runner on the field. However, Reid is aware that relying solely on this isn't a sustainable long-term strategy.
“He’s going to be one of the better athletes out there,” Reid noted. “He’s fast, big, and loves the game.
Those are qualities I appreciate.”
The real test will come during training camp, where Fields will need to address his decision-making and ball security issues. Reid is considering a tailored set of plays to maximize Fields’ strengths, but he’s clear that Fields is more than just a gadget player. “We brought him in to play quarterback if needed,” Reid emphasized.
Fields’ past performances have been a mixed bag. Back in 2022, he showcased his running skills with 1,143 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, leading the league with 7.1 yards per carry. However, his stint with the New York Jets last year was less stellar, with a 2-7 record as a starter and inconsistent passing stats.
Reid is aware of the challenges ahead but remains optimistic. “Whatever goes from there,” he said, hinting at his plans to develop Fields’ game further. With a touch of humor, Reid added, “If he gets bored, we’ll have a couple of things for him.”
Fields’ journey with the Chiefs promises to be an exciting storyline to watch, as Reid works his magic to unlock the quarterback’s full potential.
