Caitlin Clark’s first signature sneaker has already made its way to one of the NFL’s biggest names.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid was on the receiving end of a special gift this week from Clark, who sent him a pair of the new Nike Caitlin 1s. Reid got the “Sea of Red” colorway, a version inspired by the Chiefs, after Kansas City’s thrilling Week 2 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Reid showed off the shoes and made sure Clark got her flowers, saying, “I got my new Sea of Red Caitlin 1s right here. Caitlin Clark, I appreciate you girl,” Reid said.
“All the ladies of the WNBA, you guys are unbelievable - keep cranking, I love watching you. Caitlin, I love the color.
It’s the same color we wear. I love it.”
Nike released Clark’s first signature shoe earlier this year, with the Caitlin 1 retailing for $140 in North America. Clark said the design was meant to stand out while still being wearable.
“I wanted this to be something that looked different than something that’s on the shelves,” Clark said. “But I also wanted it to be something that people are comfortable wearing. I got really crazy and expressive with the colors, and I think that kind of speaks to my love for inspiring the next generation and how they love to express themselves.”
The Chiefs connection fits Clark’s background, too. She said she has been a fan of the team for years.
“I’ve been a Chiefs fan since I was a young girl,” Clark said, via the New York Post. “My brother was a Chiefs fan, my dad was a Chiefs fan.
I had cousins in Kansas City that were Chiefs fans. Honestly it was just something all I knew.
In our basement, we had a Chiefs vending machine. We had those toy helmets that were Chiefs that you could run around in the yard and I could knock helmets with my brothers.”
And with Clark now tied to the Chiefs through her sneaker line, it would not be a shock to see Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce wearing her merch sometime soon.
