Andy Reid Faces Major Chiefs Challenge Ahead of 2026 Draft Reset

With a critical offseason ahead, the Kansas City Chiefs aim to leverage their draft picks to rebuild a struggling defense and avoid a prolonged decline.

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Andy Reid, are navigating a challenging offseason after experiencing their least successful year in over a decade. With a top-10 draft pick, the Chiefs are poised for a crucial rebuild to avoid a prolonged downturn. The path forward, however, remains somewhat uncertain.

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler shared insights on "Get Up," highlighting the Chiefs' draft strategy. "The Chiefs sense the urgency with this draft," Fowler noted.

"They weren't major players in free agency because they aimed to gather more picks with the Trent McDuffie trade. Now they have two first-round picks and could use them to move back."

While this draft might not be top-heavy, Kansas City is expected to focus on bolstering their defense, particularly the secondary. They've lost key players in the back end, making cornerback help a priority. The Chiefs have a knack for drafting corners, and they'll likely seek reinforcements for the defensive line to support Chris Jones.

In a significant free agency move, the Chiefs signed Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP. With Travis Kelce confirming his return, Kansas City seems to have wrapped up most of its offensive offseason maneuvers.

As the draft approaches, defense is likely at the top of Kansas City's agenda. Following the trade of Trent McDuffie, cornerback prospects like Mansoor Delane from LSU or Avieon Terrell from Clemson could be on the radar in the first round.

Additionally, the Chiefs need to enhance their pass rush, having finished in the league's bottom quarter. With Chris Jones aging, injecting youth into the defensive line is crucial.

Prospects like David Bailey from Texas Tech or Reuben Bain Jr. from Miami could fit the bill. At the ninth pick, Kansas City may not have their top choice, but they'll likely have access to at least one of these promising players.
