Roster changes are as much a part of the NFL landscape as touchdowns and field goals, and the Kansas City Chiefs are no exception. This offseason, they've seen their cornerback room reshuffle with some notable departures. All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie was traded to the Rams, while Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams found new homes with the Rams and the Titans, respectively.
Despite these shifts, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid remains confident in the resilience of his secondary. Reid, drawing from his rich coaching history with the Packers in the '90s, knows a thing or two about rebuilding a defensive backfield.
"I’ve been in positions as a head coach where we’ve replenished the secondary," Reid shared with the NFL Network’s Judy Battista. His experience in Green Bay taught him the value of flexibility and the importance of being ready to rebuild when necessary.
One bright spot for the Chiefs is Nohl Williams. As a rookie last season, Williams played 44% of the defensive snaps and earned a top ranking among rookie cornerbacks with a 74.5 grade from Pro Football Focus. His performance suggests he’s ready for a bigger role in 2026.
Adding to the potential for a strong secondary, the Chiefs hold three top-40 picks in this year's NFL Draft. With picks at Nos. 9, 29, and 40, they have the opportunity to bolster their defensive ranks further, possibly targeting another cornerback.
Reid expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We drafted a good kid (Williams) last year, so I know we’ll continue to work through that this year. I’m really not worried about it. I look forward to seeing who these people are that come in.”
As the Chiefs navigate these changes, their ability to adapt and replenish will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge. With Reid at the helm, fans can be assured that the team is in capable hands.
