Andy Reid paused Wednesday to remember Jordan Devey, the former Chiefs offensive lineman who died last week.
Speaking with reporters on the first full day of training camp, Reid acknowledged the loss of a player who spent three seasons in Kansas City and played every one of his 18 games for the Chiefs under him.
“I know we didn’t mention Jordan Devey, who was a part of our group here for a few years, those things, they rip your heart out, and it’s a sad deal,” Reid said. “But listen, these things happen and his family will adjust to it.
“Our prayers go out to them. It’s a devastating thing.”
Devey played in the NFL from 2014 to 2020 and was with the Chiefs from 2016-18. A GoFundMe created for his widow said he died by suicide.
His parents told KUTV in Salt Lake City that they believe CTE may have played a role. Leslie Devey said they thought the possibility was “very true,” pointing to the toll of years of football.
“We believe the possibility of that was very true, simply because he had signs and symptoms,” Leslie Devey told the television station. “And the fact of the brutal beatings that he’s taken over the years playing on the field, but also during practice.”
She also said Jordan Devey had been searching online for information about CTE and was dealing with some of the symptoms.
“Jordan had been researching the signs and symptoms of CTE and was experiencing some of those symptoms,” she told the TV station.
