A wild opening week has already started shaking up the NFL futures board, and no team moved more than the Chicago Bears.
After Chicago hung 59 points on the Carolina Panthers, Caleb Williams vaulted into the early MVP conversation in a big way. He threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 65 yards and two more scores, and saw his MVP price surge from +1600 to +750 at BetMGM.
That puts Williams inside the top three behind Josh Allen at +450 and Lamar Jackson at +700. Eight players had better odds than Williams before the season began.
The Bears’ surge didn’t stop with their quarterback. Ben Johnson’s Coach of the Year number jumped from +1500, where he was tied for sixth, to +800.
Only John Harbaugh (+500) and Jesse Minter (+700) sit ahead of him now. Chicago also climbed in the NFC North race, moving past the Packers into second place at +210 behind the Lions, and its playoff odds tightened from -105 to -150.
Elsewhere on the board, Myles Garrett’s injury blew open the Defensive Player of the Year market. Garrett entered the season at +400 and was favored to win the award for a third time in four years, but after a quiet showing against the 49ers and the news that he would undergo surgery and go on injured reserve, his odds crashed to +4000.
That move guarantees he’ll miss at least the next four games. Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday he didn’t have a timeline for Garrett’s return.
That opened the door for a new favorite: Texans star Will Anderson Jr. at +350. Aidan Hutchinson is right behind him at +450, with T.J. Watt (+900), Maxx Crosby (+1100) and Nik Bonitto (+1200) filling out the top five.
The Rams, meanwhile, remain one of the strangest cases on the board. Despite opening with a loss to the 49ers, Los Angeles is still favored to win the Super Bowl at +650.
And the market hasn’t exactly rushed to punish them in the NFC West, either. The Rams are still the division favorite at +165, ahead of the 49ers at +195 and the Seahawks at +185.
The article points to LA’s unusual travel plans for that Australia game as a possible reason oddsmakers have been willing to give them a pass.
There was also a major swing in Defensive Rookie of the Year. Buccaneers first-rounder Rueben Bain Jr. had a rough debut against the Bengals, finishing with one tackle and no quarterback hits.
Todd Bowles even said Bain took a step back, and the odds reflected it: Bain dropped from +450, where he had been the favorite, to +900. David Bailey now leads the market at +400 after posting four tackles and a sack in the Jets’ win over the Titans.
Caleb Downs is next at +650, followed by Jacob Rodriguez at +800. Mansoor Delane and Sonny Styles are tied with Bain at +900.
Kansas City also made a quick move in the AFC West. After its Monday-night blowout, the Chiefs are now the odds-on favorite at -115 to win the division, flipping the board from Denver, which dropped from +200 to +260.
The Broncos still entered the season as the reigning division champs, but the Chiefs’ rise was helped further by the Chargers’ loss to the Cardinals. Los Angeles slid from +185 to +375 in the AFC West market, and its Super Bowl odds also took a hit, falling from +1700 to +2500.
