Trevor Lawrence had a simple explanation for one of the oddest little moments in Jacksonville’s blowout of New England: he was thinking about the clock, and he was thinking about fantasy football.
The Jaguars rolled past the defending AFC champions 35-6 on Sunday at home, with Liam Coen’s defense forcing three turnovers and Lawrence throwing three touchdown passes. He could have added a rushing score to the pile, too, but stopped short at the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter and let Bhayshul Tuten finish the job instead.
The sequence came with Jacksonville already ahead by 22 and moving the ball in the fourth quarter. Lawrence took a designed run on third down, fought through a crowd of tacklers, and got all the way to the goal line. Rather than step across for what would have been his first rushing touchdown of the season, he took a knee just in front of the end zone to set up 1st & Goal and burn a little more time.
The next snap made the whole thing look even stranger. Jacksonville scored anyway, with Lawrence handing the ball to Tuten for the touchdown.
Postgame, Lawrence said that “in hindsight,” he probably should have just scored, since the Jaguars wound up using only one more play. But his thinking in the moment was about clock management.
