Travis Hunter Gave Jaguars Fans Another Reason To Feel Hopeful

Travis Hunter's costly helmet-off celebration sparks a timely discussion on the NFL's fine policies amidst his standout dual-role performance for the Jaguars.

Travis Hunter’s latest NFL lesson came with a price tag.

The Jacksonville Jaguars star was fined $14,926 this week for removing his helmet on the field against the Houston Texans in last week’s 34-31 loss. The moment came after Hunter intercepted C.J. Stroud in the end zone in the fourth quarter, one of the biggest plays Jacksonville made all night.

It was the kind of celebration that usually feels harmless in the moment, especially after a game-changing takeaway. But under the league’s rules, it crossed the line. The Jaguars were fortunate not to be slapped with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for 15 yards, since Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 states that “Removal of his helmet by a player in the field of play or the end zone during a celebration or demonstration, or during a confrontation with a game official or any other player” is a penalty.

So Hunter will lose part of his next game check unless he appeals and somehow wins, which looks unlikely given that the helmet came off clearly.

The fine, though, is really just a footnote to what Hunter is doing for Jacksonville right now. The Jaguars appear to have found the right formula for him, keeping him on the field every snap on defense as their full-time CB1 while using him in select packages on offense.

And he keeps cashing in on those limited offensive chances. Against the Texans, Hunter played only nine snaps on offense but still finished with four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. He also produced two explosive plays that helped set up two different scoring drives, all while dealing with Nico Collins and holding up well in coverage.

After the game, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen pointed to the plan behind Hunter’s role.

"That was part of the plan, getting him a little bit more involved early, made some critical plays for us on both sides of the football, obviously. Had the interception late, that gave us a chance to win the game. Proud of the way he completed, made some plays for us on offense and got to keep building off it," Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said about Hunter after Week 6.

Hunter has looked like an elite cornerback over the past month, and his offense is starting to come along too. For Jacksonville, the takeaway is simple: if he keeps making plays like this and keeps his helmet on, the 2025 draft gamble is paying off in a big way.

Colts Facing A Deadline Decision That Could Affect The Jaguars

The Colts slow start has put them in an awkward spot as the NFL trade deadline approaches, and the ripple effect could matter for Jacksonville as much as anyone else in the AFC South. Sitting at 2-4, Indianapolis is weighing whether to stand pat or become a seller, with ESPNs Jeremy Fowler reporting the team may wait another week or two before settling on a direction based on how the next stretch plays out.

For the Jaguars, that uncertainty is worth monitoring because any Colts move could alter the landscape in the division, whether Indianapolis tries to chase a short-term push or starts collecting draft capital for the future. With no first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, the Colts have added incentive to consider making deals, but for now the final call remains unresolved and the coming games will likely shape it. Jaguars Suddenly Face A Bigger Problem Than Anton Harrison's Absence

Anton Harrisons ACL injury has created an immediate hole on the Jaguars offensive line, and Walker Little is the next man up at left tackle for the rest of the season. For a team trying to stabilize its protection up front, losing a starter there is a problem in the short term, especially with the position carrying so much weight in how the offense functions.

The larger issue is what this means beyond this season. Jacksonville now has an unsettled long-term answer at left tackle, which pushes the front office toward finding and developing a young offensive tackle before the 2027 offseason arrives. The depth chart can be patched together for now, but the bigger concern is making sure the Jaguars are not back in the same spot when the next roster-building window opens. [Read more 🡒]

Jaguars Bye Week Could Quietly Shape The AFC South Race

The Jaguars hit their Week 7 bye sitting at 4-2 and in control of the AFC South, which gives this break a little more significance than a typical pause in the schedule. While Jacksonville is idle, the rest of the league can still do some of the heavy lifting for its playoff outlook, with outcomes around the Texans, Colts and a handful of other teams all carrying some quiet relevance for the division picture.

Indianapolis recent struggles and front office changes only add to the intrigue, because the Jaguars will come out of the bye staring at a schedule that could tell us a lot about how firm their grip on the South really is. A few favorable results elsewhere would only strengthen Jacksonvilles position, but the bigger question is how much the rest of Week 7 can help shape the road ahead before the Jaguars return to action.
