Mike Norvell May Have Found Perfect Next Home

Could former Florida State head coach Mike Norvell's successful history with Dan Lanning lead to a strategic reunion at Oregon?

Dan Lanning has already spent plenty of time in the coaching carousel’s awkward middle seat, the one where a head coach has to keep replacing assistants and keep the whole operation steady at the same time. At Oregon, he’s now back in that familiar spot after dismissing offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer seven games into the 2026 season and handing play-calling duties to Jay Johnson on an interim basis.

That opening has naturally sent Oregon fans searching for names, and one of the loudest is Mike Norvell. Chip Kelly has also been part of the conversation because of what he meant to the Ducks during his 2009-12 run, but Norvell brings a different kind of appeal: a direct tie to Lanning’s own coaching path.

The connection runs deep. Norvell’s dismissal at Florida State has put his name in the mix around Oregon’s offensive coordinator job, and the two coaches have crossed paths at three different programs. Norvell was the one who gave Lanning his first full-time FBS assistant coaching opportunity at Memphis, and Lanning has credited him for helping shape the way he runs Oregon.

Norvell, 45, launched his head coaching career at Memphis in 2016 before taking over at Florida State for the 2020 season. He’s won conference titles at both stops and picked up national coach of the year honors along the way.

His best Florida State season came in 2023, when the Seminoles opened 13-0 and won the ACC before being left out of the four-team College Football Playoff. That year brought Norvell both the Dodd Trophy and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

The reputation he built was rooted in offense. Norvell made his name as one of the sport’s most inventive play-callers, leaning on tempo, multiple personnel groupings and a flexible running game to stress defenses. He also spent seven years recruiting in Florida, which only adds to the value of his résumé.

At Memphis, Norvell turned the Tigers into a conference champion and delivered their first outright league title since 1969. Over four seasons, he went 38-15, guided the program to a school-record 12 wins, won the American Athletic Conference championship and reached the Cotton Bowl in 2019.

His time at Florida State ended after seven seasons and a 3-5 start in 2026.

Lanning and Norvell’s history goes back even further than Memphis. They first worked together at Pittsburgh in 2011, when Lanning was a graduate assistant and Norvell was co-offensive coordinator on Todd Graham’s staff. They then followed Graham to Arizona State, where Norvell handled offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach duties while Lanning worked in defensive and recruiting roles in 2012 and 2013.

Lanning’s path then took him to Sam Houston State as defensive backs coach and co-recruiting coordinator before he joined Nick Saban’s Alabama staff as a graduate assistant for the Crimson Tide’s 2015 national championship season.

The two reunited at Memphis after Norvell became head coach. He brought Lanning in from Alabama to coach inside linebackers and serve as recruiting coordinator for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Lanning has been open about the influence Norvell, Saban and Kirby Smart have had on him. He’s said he pulled pieces from each stop and used them to build Oregon’s offensive identity around versatility, physicality and quarterback play.

“Yeah, I think ultimately, getting to watch Nick and Kirby both, Mike, there were things that you walked away with. And as a head coach, you're like, OK, I want this to be a part of what we do,” Lanning said.

He’s also been quick to praise Norvell’s approach whenever the subject comes up.

“Mike has a crazy passion for the game,” Lanning said in 2024 on Bussin’ With The Boys. “When it comes to his intensity, you want to see that start at the top.

You want a head coach that you know he’s not going to ask you to do anything that he’s not willing to do. He put in the work, he put in the time.

He looked at things outside the box, right? … A guy that’s willing to put in everything that they have for us to be successful and willing to adapt and change.”

That last part matters now, because Oregon’s offense has already had to adjust this season around Dante Moore’s injury and the shift in play-calling. Lanning has said he’s watching developments in college football and the NFL, but doesn’t expect a hire to happen “right around the corner.”

For now, Norvell’s availability gives Oregon fans another familiar name to talk about. Whether that leads to another reunion is still up in the air, but the bond between the two coaches is already well established.

Jaguars Trade Buzz Just Raised A Bigger Brian Thomas Jr Question

With the trade deadline approaching, the Jaguars are being mentioned in the same breath as several teams trying to sort out what they need most and what they might be willing to move. Jacksonville is still looking for help on the defensive line, but the latest buzz has also put wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. into the conversation, which is a notable twist for a team that would normally be expected to build around a young pass catcher like him.

The report does not point to any deal being close, and it is based on insider conversations rather than finalized movement, but it does raise a bigger question about how aggressive Jacksonville wants to be. If the Jaguars are listening on a player with Thomas' profile while also shopping for defensive line help, it suggests the front office may be weighing more than one path as the deadline nears, even as other AFC South teams like the Colts and Titans sort through their own trade calculus. Jaguars Get A Huge Thursday Night Twist From Baltimores QB Mess

The quarterback picture in Baltimore has turned into a major storyline for the Jaguars upcoming matchup, with Tyler Huntley done for the season after a turf toe injury and Lamar Jackson now sidelined on injured reserve following thumb surgery. What had already been a complicated week for the Ravens got even more unsettled when the team had to reshuffle its depth chart and keep building out emergency options behind center.

For Jacksonville, the immediate takeaway is simple: the opponent the Jaguars prepare for now looks very different from the one they expected. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano has been named the starter for Thursday night, while Baltimore also added Kedon Slovis as the backup and Austin Reed to the practice squad, leaving the Ravens with a quarterback room that suddenly looks thin and unfamiliar heading into a short-week game. Bills Suddenly Have A Shot At A Defensive Star Arizona Hates To Lose

The trade deadline chatter around Budda Baker has put a familiar name back into the league-wide conversation, and it is the kind of development that always gets attention from teams looking for help in the middle of a season. According to ESPNs Jeremy Fowler, the Cardinals safety is viewed as a potential trade candidate, with clubs such as the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars among the teams that could be interested if Arizona decides to listen.

For Jacksonville, it is another reminder that the deadline can still bring an unexpected opportunity if the right player becomes available. Arizona is also being linked to other possible trade considerations, including Josh Sweat and Jacoby Brissett, as the organization sorts through contract situations and a changing roster picture, but nothing has been finalized and these remain only reports for now.
