The Jaguars head to London in Week 5 with a 3-1 record, and Liam Coen made it clear Wednesday that the trip is about more than just crossing the Atlantic. Jacksonville is leaving its usual rhythm behind for a business trip against the 2-2 Philadelphia Eagles, and Coen said the mental side of that challenge matters as much as anything on the field.
“We got to have mental toughness to prepare ourselves throughout this week, and also have a professionalism to us that understands that this is a business trip. We're going out there to play football games, and it's something you have to do," Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said Wednesday.
He added that stepping outside the normal routine always brings some kind of disruption.
"Anytime you get outside of your normal rhythm, routine and environment, something is going to happen to you. Something will tweak. It's natural for every human being and so, what I challenge them with is to identify what it is for you that can occur when you step out of your environment and routine, and to think about it and to get ahead of it."
One of the biggest on-field developments for Jacksonville this week is the Eagles’ offensive line shakeup. Philadelphia will not have right tackle Lane Johnson after his retirement on Tuesday, which leaves rookie Markel Bell or former Jaguars tackle Fred Johnson as the options on that side. Even with that loss, Coen didn’t sound like he expects Philadelphia to overhaul its approach.
“Not much. I think it changes in terms of you're losing a really good player, right?
If you look at over the course of the years, injuries, some of the times they've had guys, sometimes they haven't, " Coen said. "I think that they have confidence in the guys being able to step up and play.
So, from a game plan standpoint, it doesn't change much.”
Johnson had been putting together a strong season, so his retirement is a real blow for Philadelphia. The Eagles have built-in answers, but they’ve also now lost Johnson, Cam Jurgens, and Jeff Stoutland over the last year, which leaves that group thinner than it was.
Coen also addressed the buzz around Travis Hunter after the rookie turned in one of the early highlights of the NFL season in Week 4. Hunter picked off Joe Burrow on a play that was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty, then later made Tee Higgins miss badly with a sharp juke before transitioning from cornerback to ball-carrier. The play had people wondering whether it might push Coen to give Hunter more offensive snaps, but Coen said Wednesday that the plan isn’t changing.
"I thought it was a really good play," Coen said. "No, we know we’re going to get him.
That was really cool. It was.
It was really cool.... It's good to see.
But what you guys want more of, and I get it, but look at the last two weeks, what he's been able to do while we stay firm on the plan. And so, will it come?
Absolutely.”
For Coen, the message was simple: trust the process. Hunter has made his presence felt at cornerback over the last two weeks, and he’s played a major role in both of Jacksonville’s recent wins. That has reinforced the Jaguars’ approach rather than pushed them off it.
The matchup also sets up a heavyweight coaching battle. Coen has built a reputation as one of football’s sharpest play-callers, but Philadelphia defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is one of the game’s most respected schemers too. Coen said Fangio’s ability to show one thing and then flip to another is what makes him so difficult to attack.
"I think that's what makes him so challenging is that he's going to have those touchés a little bit, right? Where you're like, I thought I had him there or that looked like they schemed him up and then they play a totally different coverage that they had played maybe in that situation for the previous three to four weeks.
That's what I've always really appreciated about him," Coen said. "I remember 2018 Chicago-Rams, that was really the first time we had seen the 6-1 stuff and playing everything from top down and making us earn every single play.
Every single blade of grass was earned, wasn't giving up the big plays, and obviously, Coach Belichick [North Carolina Head Coach Bill Belichick] gets a lot of credit for that Super Bowl. It really started with him at Chicago that year in 2018.”
Fangio has had success against Trevor Lawrence before, but this will be his first look at Lawrence working with Coen. Jacksonville’s offense has been one of the best in the NFL, yet Fangio is one of the few coordinators capable of matching that level of quality. Coen will need to be sharp when the Jaguars take the field in London.

Jaguars Fans Just Landed Near The Top Of A Surprising NFL List
A Harvard study taking a look at the political leanings of NFL fan bases put Jacksonville in an interesting spot, with Jaguars fans ranking near the top of the league on the Republican side of the ledger. The research also found that this kind of split usually tracks with geography, which gives the results some added context beyond the football itself.
For Jaguars supporters, the finding is less about a game-day identity than a broader snapshot of the city and region around the team. The study also came with an especially notable contrast elsewhere around the league, as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has said he stays away from endorsing political candidates and instead encourages voter registration and independent decision-making.
