Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the NFL season after tests found multiple blood clots in his lungs, leaving the Philadelphia Eagles with a major quarterback absence and a diagnosis that has now been laid out in full.
The update came in a joint statement from the Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, after further medical evaluation following an early injury scare that started with a cleat to the calf against the Los Angeles Rams. Hurts then played the next week in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a game ESPN reported he did not sleep before after doctors decided that was the safer move because he had been in hospital until 4am the night before.
He still suited up and threw for 220 yards in a 19-17 loss, then returned to the United States, where he was placed on injured reserve last week and missed Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The team and Lynn said Hurts first received a diagnosis in London of “a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.” After more testing and monitoring, that changed to “a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli.”
The statement said Hurts is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.” His treatment will involve anticoagulation, or blood thinners, and he will not be permitted to take part in any contact activity, including football.
The team added that “Jalen's prognosis is very good. And we expect a full recovery.
We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners.”
It also said, “In the meantime. He will remain active around the team and continue to condition.
More importantly. We anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.
We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”
Hurts had first shown up on the injury report the Friday before the Jaguars game as a full participant with a calf injury. He was never listed as questionable or doubtful and carried no injury designation into the game, even though the calf issue was already there.
After the London trip, Hurts called the week “a very unique experience, to say the least,” and added, “I don't want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot, but got nicked up in the Rams game.”
With Hurts sidelined, Tanner McKee took over and the Eagles’ offense sputtered. In the loss to Carolina, Philadelphia managed just 222 yards and fell 25-14, dropping to 2-4. McKee completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown.
“It's really hard to win in the NFL only putting up 14 points,” McKee said, after he finished 26 of 45 for 215 passing yards and a touchdown.
“I am so much better, and I'm looking forward to learning everything and becoming the player that I know I am, the player that I can prove that I am,” he added.
Nick Sirianni is now looking at every option. With the season slipping, the Eagles coach said “everything's on the table” after signing Joe Milton from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad and keeping rookie Cole Payton in the quarterback room.

Jaguars Have One Trade Deadline Need They Cant Ignore
The Jaguars hit their Week 7 bye at 4-2, but the break comes with a clear reminder of where the roster still needs help. Even in a strong start to the season, the defense has shown cracks in pass coverage, and those issues have been most obvious at cornerback, where opposing quarterbacks have found too much room to work.
Jacksonvilles front appears steadier, and other areas of the roster look more settled, but cornerback depth remains a concern that is hard to ignore with the trade deadline approaching. If the Jaguars want to protect what has been a promising start, adding at least one more capable cover man looks like a priority rather than a luxury. [Read more 🡒]
Jaguars Could Face An Unwanted Buccaneers Coaching Problem Soon
The Buccaneers rough start has put Todd Bowles under real pressure, and when a division rival starts drifting into coaching uncertainty, it tends to create ripple effects elsewhere in the NFC South. For Jacksonville, the name worth watching is Grant Udinski, who has drawn notice in conversations about possible replacements along with more established figures such as Mike Tomlin and Zac Taylor, plus other rising assistants like Nate Scheelhaase, Klay Kubiak and Anthony Campanile.
For the Jaguars, the issue is less about Tampa Bays record than about how quickly a coaching search can turn from speculation into a league-wide scramble. Nothing has been decided yet, but if the Buccaneers do move on from Bowles, Jacksonville would suddenly be dealing with a familiar rival facing a major reset and the possibility of a staff change that could reshape the balance in the division. Jaguars Loss To Jalen Hurts Looks Different After Disturbing Update
Jalen Hurts performance against the Jaguars in London already stood out as one of the more impressive showings of the season, and the latest medical update has only sharpened the context around it. Before the diagnosis was fully understood, Hurts was dealing with a blood clot in his calf and had to stay awake for roughly 36 hours as a medical precaution, yet he still took the field and guided the game through all four quarters.
The Eagles quarterback was later diagnosed with the clot and placed on injured reserve, ending his season and making that trip overseas look even more extraordinary in hindsight. Against Jacksonville, he still finished with 220 passing yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, a line that now reads very differently given what was going on behind the scenes. [Read more 🡒]
