The Jaguars added Ameer Abdullah in May, and the veteran running back arrives in Jacksonville with a long NFL track record and a chance to carve out a role in a crowded room.
Abdullah, who wears No. 43, was originally a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL draft. He spent his first four seasons in Detroit before moving on to stops with Minnesota, Carolina, Las Vegas and, most recently, Indianapolis.
His 2025 season had a little bit of everything. The San Francisco 49ers signed Abdullah in July, but he landed on injured reserve in August. He later joined the Colts’ practice squad early in the season and was promoted to the 53-man roster in mid-October.
Once he got on the field, Abdullah handled a small but useful workload. He ran 14 times for 60 yards and scored one touchdown, while also contributing as a receiver with 16 catches. He also took on some return work.
For the Jaguars, Abdullah’s value is tied to versatility. He brings more than a decade of experience to the running back group, but he’s also trying to show he can offer more than just veteran depth. If Jacksonville keeps four running backs, that could open the door for him.
Even if he makes the final roster, the most likely path to playing time is through his all-around skill set. Abdullah has experience as a pass catcher and kickoff returner, and he can help on multiple special teams units. That kind of flexibility is what gives him a real shot to stick.
