The Jaguars’ cornerback room has wasted no time making its presence felt in training camp.
After just three practices, that group is already separating itself from the rest of the defense. Friday brought the biggest splash yet, with Jarrian Jones turning in the top performance of the day and picking off two passes. It was the latest sign that Jacksonville’s coverage unit is coming together fast.
A big part of that early momentum has been the return of Jourdan Lewis and Travis Hunter from injury. Their presence has clearly lifted the group, and Montaric Brown is still trending upward as camp opens. John Shipley of Jaguars on SI also pointed to Jabbar Muhammad as a player who has been “active in coverage,” adding to the strong impression he made during offseason work.
For the offense, the first two practices have made moving the ball a real challenge.
"The play style of our guys," Anthony Campanile began, "and I think that's kind of an extension or reflection of Matt (Araujo) and Perk (Anthony Perkins), Drew Lascari, Bill Sheridan, those guys are all over them, but I think they've brought an extreme level of detail to the guys. There's a lot of accountability in that room.
They're hard on each other, but they love playing together. So that's a great room.
It's a great room to be in just day-to-day, even in meetings and everything. They're passionate about football and always looking to do more.
So that's coming together in terms of who's going to do what."
That kind of tight, detail-heavy play is exactly what Jacksonville needs from this unit. The Jaguars already did a good job creating turnovers last season and finished seventh in yards per pass attempt allowed, but there’s still room for this secondary to tighten the screws.
The biggest area where that can matter is on third down. Jacksonville’s defense ranked 21st in conversion rate there last season and gave up too many chunk plays. Better coverage could change that quickly.
It should also help up front. If the corners can stay plastered in coverage a little longer, the pass rush gets extra time to close in and finish the job.
