Jaguars Secondary Could Get A Needed Boost Before Colts Game

With cornerback Montaric Brown returning from injury, the Jaguars aim to strengthen their struggling pass defense against the Colts in Week 8.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be getting a badly needed lift in the secondary just in time for Week 8.

Cornerback Montaric Brown was listed as a full participant in practice for the second straight day Thursday, a strong sign he could be back on the field when Jacksonville faces the Indianapolis Colts. Brown has been out far more than in lately, appearing for just six snaps over the Jaguars’ last three games because of the hamstring injury that first showed up on the injury report during the lead-up to Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

His absence has mattered. Before Brown got hurt, he wasn’t exactly stacking up a banner season, but Jacksonville’s pass defense has still taken a hit since then, ranking No. 28 in EPA/Play and No. 24 in success rate against the pass over the last three weeks.

Even if Brown doesn’t walk back into a starting role immediately, his return would give the Jaguars another experienced option in a spot that has been stretched thin. That matters with Travis Hunter, Jarrian Jones, and Jourdan Lewis already part of the mix.

“Certainly, we'd have a guy who's got a lot of experience who knows our system. It'd be good to have him back out there healthy," Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said on Thursday.

Brown’s only action since the injury came in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles, when he played six snaps and then exited after giving up a long touchdown pass to Darius Cooper in man coverage. That sequence was the clearest snapshot yet of what the hamstring issue had cost him. The next week, with Brown sidelined against the Houston Texans, Jacksonville turned in one of its roughest defensive outings in the last two seasons.

"I know in the Philly game, tough situation where he got hurt there in the game, but he looks good and we gain a veteran presence, and we gain a level of physicality anytime Buster's out there," Campanile said. "I think he's done a great job for us that way on the line of scrimmage, tackling, being physical, even in the coverage element of everything. So yeah, that's what we gain with him in there.”

Brown’s possible return could also ripple beyond the defense. With him available, the Jaguars may be able to free up Hunter for more offensive work after his dominant showing against the Houston Texans. Brown’s absence was the main reason Hunter did not play an offensive snap in Week 4 against the Bengals, the only game in Hunter’s career in which he has not taken a snap on both sides of the ball.

The timing lines up well for Jacksonville, too, because the secondary may need all the help it can get. Safety Antonio Johnson missed practice for the second straight day with an ankle injury and looks unlikely to play against the Colts, pushing more responsibility toward backups such as Kaevon Merriweather and toward Brown if he is cleared.

“Every game's different and I think we're fortunate where we got a really good room there, and I think Kaevon [Merriweather] has done a good job coming in here as a new guy who's stepped up and given us the opportunity to have another guy that can kind of play some of those roles," Campanile said.

"I think even watching him in the last game, you see some physicality, and I think he's learning everything we're doing. He's worked really hard at it.

I think Perk [Defensive Backs Coach Anthony Perkins] has done a great job with him, getting him up to speed. So, there's some other guys in that room who help us that way.

Like any game, you're always adjusting.”

Jaguars May Have Found A Rookie Starter Fans Can't Ignore

The Jaguars have gotten an immediate return from Emmanuel Pregnon, the third-round pick who has stepped straight into the left guard job and handled it like a veteran. Through his first six games, he has been on the field for 382 offensive snaps and has yet to allow a sack, a strong early sign for a rookie who arrived with real expectations after earning first-team All-American honors at Oregon.

Sports Illustrateds Justin Melo recently ranked Pregnon as the top third-round rookie, pointing to the kind of early impact Jacksonville has been looking for up front. There have been some pressures and penalties along the way, which is hardly unusual for a first-year lineman, but the bigger picture is hard to miss: the Jaguars may have found a starter they can trust right away, and the rest of the season will show how far that trust can go. Brian Thomas Jr. Is Suddenly At Center Of A Jaguars Trade Idea

A speculative trade idea has put Brian Thomas Jr. in the middle of a conversation the Jaguars probably did not expect to be having this early in the season. Fox Sports analyst Steven Ruiz and ESPNs Ben Solak both floated a potential swap with Kansas City that would send Xavier Worthy to Jacksonville and Thomas the other way, framing it as a way for both teams to address different needs through two receivers with very different profiles and contract situations.

For the Jaguars, the notion is especially striking because Thomas has quickly become the kind of player around whom teams build, not one they casually place into hypothetical deals. Nothing has been announced by either club, and this remains firmly in the realm of outside speculation, but the proposal is still notable because it shows how highly Thomas is valued and how much attention Jacksonvilles receiver room is drawing beyond its own building. Jaguars May Need One Bold Trade To Fix Their Biggest Weakness

The NFL trade market is already starting to shape the conversation around how the Jaguars can patch up their roster, and the defensive line sits near the top of the list. Under general manager James Gladstone, Jacksonville has shown a willingness to explore trades, which makes this a natural place to look if the team wants a quicker fix than waiting for the draft or free agency to do the heavy lifting.

Players such as Payne and Ojomo are the kinds of names that make sense on paper because of their fit and contract situations, but this is still a matter of possibility rather than something concrete. For a Jaguars team trying to strengthen its front, the question is whether the right deal is out there and whether Jacksonville is ready to be aggressive enough to pull it off. [Read more 🡒]
