The Jacksonville Jaguars are heading into the first week of the preseason, but Friday’s Teal & White scrimmage may have already done plenty to shape the 53-man roster picture.
Inside the practice facility at the Miller Electric Center, the Jaguars got one of the most revealing looks of camp so far, and a few battles are starting to separate themselves. The biggest movement came at strong side linebacker, along the offensive line, and at running back.
At linebacker, the fight between Jalen McLeod and Yasir Abdullah has been one of camp’s more interesting subplots. It is not a starting job in Anthony Campanile’s defense, but it could still matter in a real way. The winner could wind up as a special teams contributor who also finds defensive snaps as either a pass-rusher or an off-ball linebacker, and the spot may also point toward a future role behind Dennis Gardeck.
“I'm glad you asked that because McLeod and Gardeck, those are guys who basically played on the line of scrimmage. If you look at McLeod's career in college, that's what he was.
To me, it's really hard to do what those two guys have done," Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said after Saturday's walkthrough. "Dennis was very similar in Arizona, predominantly in an end type of role, edge role, and has trained himself to be an off-the-ball guy.
So, both of those guys have done a great job."
McLeod and Abdullah both flashed at different points on defense, and both had solid moments rushing the passer during the scrimmage. McLeod looked especially good coming off the edge while also showing he can work at off-ball linebacker. Campanile’s comments made it sound like McLeod may have edged ahead with the way he handled the practice.
"Dennis has done a great job, I think, working with Jalen and Jalen stayed around him, and they did a great job this summer, and Jalen knows the system, so he's been able to play off the ball and play pretty well. He had a good day yesterday.
And again, he still gives you third-down rush value. So, both of those guys are very similar in that regard," Campanile said.
"And some guys have that third-down value of, they're really good cover guys, so they stay in the game at linebacker on third down. So, they give us a little bit of variety and give us a chance to do different things with them in the game.
Yasir's very similar. He's an edge guy, now knows how to play on his feet.
He's done a lot of good things for us too, so that's been a great kind of battle to watch and watching them all work together."
Up front, the Jaguars appear to be feeling the effects of the injuries they have piled up. The team added another offensive lineman on Saturday, which points to a group that needs more bodies after a rough stretch.
Cole Van Lanen is on the Active/PUP list, Patrick Mekari has not taken a rep in team drills in camp, and Walker Little left Friday’s practice early and did not return. Little was also missing from Saturday’s walkthrough.
Van Lanen’s status and whether he is ready for Week 1 has always mattered for how the Jaguars will build the line, but Little’s injury could create even more movement. Chuma Edoga needed help from the numbers to make the roster in the first place, and the injuries that showed up after Friday may be what gets him into the Jaguars’ first 53-man group.
If Little’s issue turns out to be minor and he is back soon, then Van Lanen’s timeline becomes the key question. Even so, Edoga was clearly working as OT3 during Saturday’s walkthrough. On a fully healthy roster, he would probably be OT5 or OT6.
The backfield also has a few names worth watching, even if the top of the chart looks settled. Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and LeQuint Allen look like roster locks, which leaves the real debate at RB4 between Ameer Abdullah, J'Mari Taylor, and DeeJay Dallas.
Taylor entered camp as the name many were watching most closely after a strong spring as an undrafted free agent. But Abdullah has been the one getting the bulk of the second-team work, and he backed that up in the scrimmage by breaking off two long gains against the starting defense.
The Jaguars are unlikely to keep four running backs after carrying three for most of last season. But if they do decide to go with four into Week 1, Abdullah looks like the likeliest choice for the final spot.

The Jaguars kept working to shore up Trevor Lawrences protection on Saturday, adding veteran offensive lineman Geron Christian as camp injuries continued to thin out the group in front of him. To make the roster move, Jacksonville placed rookie Garrett DiGiorgio on the Reserve/Injured list, ending his season before it really got going, a reminder of how quickly the depth chart can change once the pads come on.
It is the kind of roster adjustment teams hope not to make this early, but the Jaguars have little choice with several veteran linemen already banged up or limited in practice. Walker Littles absence from Saturdays walkthrough only added to the concern, turning what had been a routine camp story into one worth watching closely as Jacksonville tries to keep its quarterback upright. Jaguars Offensive Line Battle Is Starting To Feel Very Real
Training camp has already turned the Jaguars offensive line into one of the clearest competitions on the roster, with Jacksonville testing out a range of combinations to see what sticks. Anton Harrison, Walker Little, Wyatt Milum, Chuma Edoga and Emmanuel Pregnon have all been moved around as the staff looks for the best five and tries to keep everyone ready for a long season.
The approach is about more than just sorting out a starting group. The Jaguars want real competition across the line, and they also want insurance if injuries force them to reshuffle at some point. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen has already spoken positively about Harrisons work, but the bigger picture is still taking shape as the team keeps cross-training players at multiple spots.
