JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The early buzz out of Jaguars training camp has plenty of familiar names attached to it, but the most obvious breakout story so far belongs to a pair of rookie wide receivers.
Parker Washington has flashed. Travon Walker has been tough to handle.
Travis Hunter has already shown off the kind of skills that seem to exist in a category of one. Still, when it comes to the player who has gone from relative afterthought to camp talking point, the answer is Josh Cameron and C.J.
Williams.
Both were sixth-round picks in April, and both entered camp with the kind of profile that can get buried in a receiver room packed with talent. A few months ago, the conversation centered on Washington, Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., and Jakobi Meyers. Now, through the first week of camp, Cameron and Williams have forced their way into the discussion.
They’ve done it in different ways, but the result has been the same: production. They’ve made plays downfield, in the middle of the field and by creating separation. That kind of consistency has made them impossible to ignore.
“Really, they're very similar to the guys we saw on tape. They're tough, smart, competitive guys that work really hard," Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said after practice on Sunday.
"They're in here early. They're in here late.
They're great to be around. The guys love being around them.
They play tough. They play hard.
All the cliches, I hate to say it, but all the cliches that you want as a coach and a player, they've brought that and more every single day. So, you love to see that, and then you love to see the consistency on top of it.
So, when you see them make plays, just like I talked about Parker, it's not a surprise. I don't want to take it for granted, but it's not a surprise because you see the amount of work they put in.”
What makes the start especially eye-catching is that these plays haven’t been limited to second- and third-string competition. Cameron beat Travis Hunter on a route earlier in the week, and Williams connected on a nice chunk gain downfield against the Jaguars’ starting secondary on Friday.
Williams, in particular, has been hard to miss. Cameron came into the draft conversation with some real attention because of his size, blocking ability and special teams value.
Williams, by contrast, didn’t draw much national buzz. None of that has mattered once the pads went on and the work started piling up.
Since the offseason program, Williams has seemed to make at least one play every day he’s been on the field, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed inside the building.
"He’s made a play every day. I think the smart part is really what stands out for him.
Like, I don't think he's had a mistake. And if he has, he’s definitely got less than I do," Jakobi Meyers said on Sunday.
"So, he's doing a great job and I just expect him to continue to do a great job. We’re going to get better technique wise and other than that, he’s going to be fine.
He’s going to be good in this league.”

Travis Hunters fifth day of Jaguars training camp was quieter than the one before it, but it still fit the larger picture of how Jacksonville is using him early on. He was on the field for both offense and defense again, working through multiple 11-on-11 periods and splitting his reps between the two sides while the staff continues to test his versatility in live practice settings.
The box score side of the day was empty, with no catch and no pass breakup to show for his work, though there were a few near plays along the way. Even so, the snap count itself mattered, especially after a previous practice when Hunter flashed more visibly with a catch and an interception.
