Liam Coen got a little more specific about the Jaguars’ offensive line after the preseason game with Carolina, and the biggest takeaway is simple: Cole Van Lanen is headed to right tackle once he’s fully ready to go.
Van Lanen came off the physically unable to perform list last week, and Coen said there will likely be a ramp-up period before he’s back in full 11-on-11 work. But the plan is clear enough. When Van Lanen is ready, Anton Harrison will remain at left tackle.
That gives Jacksonville at least some structure on the outside. Harrison has spent the summer working on the left side while Van Lanen was out, and that alignment now appears set for the regular season once everyone is healthy.
Inside, though, the picture is still unsettled. Robert Hainsey is slated to start at center, but the guard spots remain up in the air.
Ezra Cleveland is expected to start somewhere, but the Jaguars still have to decide whether that means left guard or right guard. If Cleveland ends up at right guard, rookie Emmanuel Pregnon could slide into the starting left guard spot.
If Cleveland stays at left guard, then the competition shifts to the right side, where Walker Little, Daniel Faalele, and Wyatt Milum are all in the mix. Jonah Monheim could also factor into that battle.
It’s been a summer marked by injuries along the offensive line, but Van Lanen’s return at least gives Coen more pieces to work with as he tries to settle on the best starting five.
