Jaguars Mock Draft Revives A Familiar Secondary Concern

The Jacksonville Jaguars are eyeing defensive reinforcements for the upcoming 2027 NFL Draft, with standout Cal safety Kingston Lopa in their sights, as they strategize during their bye week.

With the bye week giving the Jacksonville Jaguars some breathing room, attention has already started to drift toward the 2027 NFL draft - and one early mock has them going where they’ve shown a clear willingness to invest: defense.

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports slotted the Jaguars at No. 27 and had them taking Cal safety Kingston Lopa. It’s an early projection, of course, and plenty will change before draft day arrives.

But these kinds of mock drafts still serve a purpose, especially this far out. They spotlight names worth tracking through the rest of the college season and into the pre-draft grind.

Edwards described Lopa this way: "Kingston Lopa is a tall safety who plays with great range and has managed unimpeachable ball production in a short time as a starter for a rudderless California team," Edwards wrote. "Lopa has to do a better job tackling, but everything Liam Coen and his coaching staff have touched has turned to gold."

Lopa has backed up that billing with production early this season. Through six games, he has five interceptions and one pass breakup, including a three-interception showing against Syracuse.

The fit also makes sense when you look at how Jacksonville has approached the safety room under general manager James Gladstone. In his first two drafts, he selected Caleb Ransaw and Rayuan Lane in 2025, then added Jalen Huskey this past April.

The results, though, have been uneven so far. Ransaw has been slowed by injuries, Lane has mostly contributed on special teams, and Huskey has been largely inactive.

There’s also some roster movement to keep in mind as the Jaguars look ahead. Antonio Johnson is set to hit free agency in 2027, and Eric Murray will be entering the final year of his deal, though Jacksonville does have an out.

Jaguars Offense Has One Annoying Problem It Cant Keep Carrying

The Jaguars have been fighting through a frustrating issue in recent games, and it showed up again in Week 6 with five drops against the Texans. For an offense that has tried to build momentum under Liam Coen, those missed chances have become too noticeable to ignore, especially when drives are being slowed by plays that should be routine.

Coen said the drops were a concern but not something that sent the coaching staff into panic mode, pointing in part to the weather in Houston. Still, Jacksonville knows it needs a cleaner showing before Week 8 against the Colts, because the margin for error in the AFC South is thin and the offense cannot keep giving away easy completions. Jaguars Fans Wont Agree On This Brian Thomas Jr Trade Idea

Brian Thomas Jr. has already given Jaguars fans plenty to talk about, and now an offseason trade idea has stirred up a different kind of debate. ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell floated a proposal that would send the Jacksonville wideout to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick, a kind of move that would instantly alter the conversation around one of the NFLs most intriguing young receivers.

From Jacksonvilles side, the pushback is easy to understand. Thomas is the sort of player teams usually try to build around, not move for a future pick, even if the pitch makes some sense for a Raiders offense trying to give rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza a clear top target. For now, it remains exactly what it is, a speculative idea, but it is the sort of deal that can split a fan base fast because it forces a choice between present value and long-term planning. Brian Thomas Jr. Has Become A Real Jaguars Trade Question

Brian Thomas Jr. has gone from a promising young piece to a surprising conversation starter in Jacksonville, and it has not taken long for the chatter to turn into actual trade speculation. ESPNs Bill Barnwell floated a hypothetical deal that would send the receiver to the Raiders for a 2027 second-round pick, a reminder of how quickly perceptions can change when a players role starts shrinking instead of growing.

The Jaguars have not exactly advertised any interest in moving Thomas, but his playing time has dropped enough to make the idea feel less far-fetched than it would have a few weeks ago. Liam Coen has already talked about the need for players to step up, and the recent usage pattern has only added to the sense that Jacksonville may be at least willing to listen if the right offer comes along.
