The Jaguars moved quickly after Week 1, reportedly agreeing to terms with former Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker BJ Ojulari after bringing him in for a visit Tuesday, according to insider Jordan Schultz.
For Jacksonville, the timing says plenty. The move came just a day after head coach Liam Coen said BJ Green would be out against the Denver Broncos in Week 2 and added that it will "probably going to be a little bit," before Green is back. That makes Ojulari look like more than a routine depth pickup; it reads like a direct answer to Green’s injury against the Cleveland Browns.
Green’s absence leaves a specific kind of hole. The Jaguars already have enough pass-rush talent to feel good about what they showed in Week 1, so this isn’t about scrambling to fix the front.
It’s about replacing a player whose value stretched beyond pure edge pressure. Green was useful on special teams, and he could also drop into coverage on zone looks - a role that rookie undrafted defensive end Bryan Thomas Jr., fourth-round pick Wesley Williams and Danny Striggow are not likely to handle in the same way.
That’s where Ojulari fits. He has the size and traits to work off the ball and drop into coverage when needed, much like Green.
He also brings real special teams experience, with 187 special teams snaps across 25 appearances for the Cardinals. Given that Jacksonville also had issues in kickoff coverage against the Browns, there’s a clear path for Ojulari to contribute early.
The upside here is worth noting, too. Ojulari is only 24, was a second-round pick in 2023 out of LSU, and has barely played two dozen NFL games because injuries have slowed his career.
Even so, he arrives with a pedigree that gives the Jaguars more than just a warm body on the edge. If he settles in as steady depth and chips in as a pass rusher, this could end up being a sharp response from general manager James Gladstone to Green’s injury.
