The Jaguars appear to be making a change behind Trevor Lawrence.
Jacksonville is acquiring quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins, according to an NFL Network report later confirmed to the Times-Union by a league source. The Times-Union also confirmed the Jaguars will send a sixth-round draft pick to Miami.
The move suggests Jacksonville may not have been sold on what it saw from its other backup options this preseason. Nick Mullens, Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar all took snaps, but the group combined for 55 completions on 86 attempts, 623 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and an 82.7 passer rating.
If the Jaguars end up cutting Mullens, they would take on a $1.3 million dead cap hit while opening up $1.2 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap.
Ewers is 23 and entered the league as a seventh-round pick by Miami in 2025. He went 1-2 as a starter for the Dolphins, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His lone win came in a 20-17 victory over Tampa Bay, when he threw for 172 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Before the NFL, Ewers played at Texas after transferring from Ohio State. At Texas, he completed 737 of 1,135 passes, a 64.9 percent mark, for 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He appeared in just one game at Ohio State.
Ewers was also a major name coming out of high school. 247Sports ranked him the No. 1 prospect in the country in the 2021 recruiting class out of Southlake (Texas) Carroll.
In Jacksonville, he’ll be joining a quarterback room that includes some notable recruiting pedigree. The Jaguars also have the No. 1 overall high school recruits from the 2017 class, offensive lineman Walker Little, and the 2018 class, Lawrence, plus Travis Hunter, who was the top-rated prospect in the 2022 class and works at cornerback and receiver.
The Jaguars must trim their roster from 90 players to 53 by the NFL deadline of 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.
