Baltimore’s quarterback situation has gone from shaky to stripped bare in a hurry, and now the Ravens are turning to an undrafted rookie to steer the offense on Thursday night.
Joe Fagnano will make his first NFL start against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Tyler Huntley’s season ended with a turf toe injury, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. Huntley was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday’s 36-10 loss at Buffalo, and tests confirmed Wednesday that the injury will shut him down for the year.
Ravens coach Jesse Minter announced the move a day earlier and made clear the team is eager to see what Fagnano can do.
“We’ll be starting Joe at quarterback this week on Thursday,” Minter said. “An opportunity we’re fired up about. Excited to play in front of our fans Thursday night against a really good team.”
The Ravens are also without two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, whose brief return from a high left ankle sprain lasted only one snap. On that play, his right hand hit Bills outside linebacker Greg Rousseau on the follow-through, and Jackson left with a thumb injury that was obvious to anyone watching.
He now needs surgery and has been placed on injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least four games. Asked if the injury could end Jackson’s season, Minter said, “Potentially, but we’ll see where it’s at.”
Huntley had been filling in while Jackson recovered and went 1-2 as the starter. His night in Buffalo ended after about 10 snaps when he injured his toe on a sack-fumble. The loss dropped Baltimore to 4-4, gave the club three straight defeats, and sent it to last place in the AFC North just as Jackson’s return had seemed poised to open things up against Buffalo.
Now the spotlight belongs to Fagnano, a 25-year-old who started his college career as a walk-on at Maine before finishing at UConn and signing with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent. He won a roster spot over fellow undrafted rookie Diego Pavia after completing 56 of 75 passes for 509 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the preseason.
His first taste of NFL action was rough. Against Buffalo, Fagnano went 10 of 21 for 91 yards, threw an interception and lost a fumble. He’s also dealing with an ankle injury that limited him Monday before he returned to full practice Tuesday.
Even with the rocky debut, Minter said the rookie earned the chance.
“Going all the way back, it’s a guy that took advantage of opportunities,” Minter said. He also called Fagnano “cool, calm and collected.”
Fagnano will be the second undrafted rookie quarterback to start for the Ravens, following Anthony Brown in 2022.
Baltimore has already made another move behind him, signing Kedon Slovis off Green Bay’s practice squad and adding Austin Reed to its practice squad. The Ravens could still chase a veteran on the trade market, but with the short week, Fagnano is the only real answer for Thursday.
The Jaguars come in at 5-2 and sitting on top of the AFC South, though they’ve lost defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton for the season. That could tilt the game toward Derrick Henry and Baltimore’s ground attack, which may need to carry more than usual while the rookie quarterback settles in.
Jaguars at Ravens kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET Thursday at M&T Bank Stadium.

Jaguars Trade Buzz Just Raised A Bigger Brian Thomas Jr Question
With the trade deadline approaching, the Jaguars are being mentioned in the same breath as several teams trying to sort out what they need most and what they might be willing to move. Jacksonville is still looking for help on the defensive line, but the latest buzz has also put wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. into the conversation, which is a notable twist for a team that would normally be expected to build around a young pass catcher like him.
The report does not point to any deal being close, and it is based on insider conversations rather than finalized movement, but it does raise a bigger question about how aggressive Jacksonville wants to be. If the Jaguars are listening on a player with Thomas' profile while also shopping for defensive line help, it suggests the front office may be weighing more than one path as the deadline nears, even as other AFC South teams like the Colts and Titans sort through their own trade calculus. Bills Suddenly Have A Shot At A Defensive Star Arizona Hates To Lose
The trade deadline chatter around Budda Baker has put a familiar name back into the league-wide conversation, and it is the kind of development that always gets attention from teams looking for help in the middle of a season. According to ESPNs Jeremy Fowler, the Cardinals safety is viewed as a potential trade candidate, with clubs such as the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars among the teams that could be interested if Arizona decides to listen.
For Jacksonville, it is another reminder that the deadline can still bring an unexpected opportunity if the right player becomes available. Arizona is also being linked to other possible trade considerations, including Josh Sweat and Jacoby Brissett, as the organization sorts through contract situations and a changing roster picture, but nothing has been finalized and these remain only reports for now. Jaguars Get A Huge Week 9 Opportunity In Baltimore
Week 9 brings a chance for the Jaguars to take advantage of a Ravens team dealing with uncertainty at quarterback, and it comes at a time when the AFC standings are starting to tighten. For Jacksonville, this is the kind of game that can matter twice over: it is a road test against a familiar kind of physical opponent, and it also arrives with playoff implications already beginning to loom over the schedule.
Baltimores quarterback situation leaves the door open for Jacksonville to press its edge, and the Jaguars are being viewed as a team that can walk into that spot and leave with a win. Around the rest of the league, the Bengals-Falcons matchup adds another layer to the week, with Atlanta carrying enough recent momentum to make an upset feel possible. For Jacksonville, though, the focus stays on Baltimore and the opportunity in front of it. [Read more 🡒]
